Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Education, Health and Social Work, Speech – Language Pathology Program invites applications for a full-time, permanent position as Program Director of the Speech – Language Pathology Graduate Program.  This position is a faculty/administrative appointment with a target start date of August 15, 2016
The Speech – Language Pathology Program is housed in the Division of Education, Health and Social Work.   The Program is CAA accredited and currently offers a graduate degree in speech-language pathology.  Program faculty are highly committed to preparing students for a variety of clinical interactions with specific focus on training students to meet the needs of underserved, multicultural populations through focus on issues of disparity in health concerns and allied health provider response.
 
                                                                                                                                               
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                  

  • Establish annual goals and objectives which are congruent with the university’s strategic goals and the college’s strategic initiatives;
  • Work closely with the Division Chair and Division program coordinators and directors to establish and accomplish University accreditation and ASHA CAA accreditation goals;
  • Work closely with the assessment team to monitor data system development, and data collection, analysis, and reporting internally and to accreditation and other external agencies as well as use data for decision-making in the program ;
  • Track and monitor program progress and accomplishments towards meeting established goals, including but not limited to program effectiveness, alumni effectiveness, employer satisfaction, student satisfaction and student enrollment
  • Ensure that all reports are completed timely and accurately and submitted to external agencies and organizations and internal offices and units
  • Evaluate faculty and staff and ensure that they receive appropriate professional development, technical assistance, and mentoring;
  • Develop and monitor faculty workloads and recommend promotions and hire for program faculty in the division
  • Perform duties and responsibilities of certification officer for the division which includes recommending graduates for professional licensure in the District of Columbia and responding to out-of- state licensure requests
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chair of the Division of Education, Health and Social Work and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences
 
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Doctorate (PhD) in Speech - Language Pathology
  • Current clinical certification in speech-language pathology from the American Speech – Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • At least 5 years experience teaching in the field of Speech – Language Pathology and have earned a rank of Associate Professor or Professor
  • At least three years experience as a chairperson or program director of a CAA accredited program in Speech – Language Pathology.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and managing complex accreditation or related processes relevant to regional, and teacher education standards, and assessment processes through which successful outcomes are consistently attained
  • District of Columbia Licensure or eligibility for a DC License in speech – language pathology;
  • Five (5) years of clinical instruction experience;
  • Established record of scholarly productivity;
  • Expertise in normal and disordered voice production, language and literacy, speech science, social language disorder, multicultural issues, prelinguistic developmental delay, aural rehabilitation , and/or deaf education; and
  • Established record of graduate student advising/mentoring including directing research projects.

  3. Outstanding communication skills;
  4. Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity to variations across age, gender socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, cultural, national origin, and prior training and educational experience;
  5. Knowledge of the application of evidence-based assessment and treatment practices in communication disorders that cover the span and scope of contemporary practices with both child and adult populations; and
  6. Working knowledge of CAA policy, training, accreditation, and certification standards.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
