Brief Description of Duties:
- Directs and maintains law and order; observes, reports, and responds to illegal and unauthorized activity occurring on university owned and controlled premises through District laws, ordinances, enforcement of university policies, procedures and protocols, and the District of Columbia Official Code.
- Oversees the conduct of preliminary investigations of crimes, accidents, disposal of complaints, and the recovery of stolen property, equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Maintains responsibility/accountability for all shift activity and assigned duties during their respective tour of duty, to include (but not limited to) the following: Criminal/non-criminal calls for service, interviews and investigations, case activity/reports, administrative reports/paperwork, equipment issuance, monitoring of special details/events, time keeping, leave tracking, and personnel deployment and notifications.
- Maintains immediate and constant accessibility to assigned personnel, working closely with personnel to ensure that directives, policies, and procedures are communicated effectively and executed according to established protocol.
- Investigates and resolves customer and employee complaints; assesses and addresses other unsatisfactory conditions pertaining to the quality of life.
- Establishes and sustains positive/effective working partnerships with direct reports, supervisors, university officials and constituencies, and various other internal/external entities for the purpose of clear and timely communications and information sharing.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Police Science or a related field of study, or possession of a high school diploma and three years of supervisory experience is required.
- Must have supervisory experience at least at the level of Sergeant at a recognized law enforcement agency in patrol operations/management.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
