Brief Description of Duties

This position assists staff with technical support of desktop computers, applications, and related technology. Support includes specification, installation, and testing of computer systems and peripherals within established standards and guidelines. Activities require interaction with application software and operating systems to diagnose and resolve unique, non-recurring problems. The position utilizes one-on-one consultancy to end users and University I.T. staff. The employee in this position also assists in the maintenance and testing of servers and associated equipment. The position’s responsibilities require independent analysis, communication and problem solving. Work is performed with little supervision and requires initiative and judgment. The incumbent works under direct supervision of the Coordinator of Help Desk and the general oversight of the Manager of Client Services.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 

  1. Resolves hardware and software problems expeditiously and with minimum disruption to end users and coordinates hardware repairs with vendors
  2. Installs and configures computer related hardware and software according to term schedules, scope of objectives, and standards
  3. Assists faculty, staff and students with desktop and network software from installation to troubleshooting
  4. Log, update and solve outstanding Help Desk tickets
  5. Maintains hardware and software inventory and documentation
  6. Coordinates software needs with Client Services Manager for each term
  7. Supports on-call schedule and response to priority incidents as needed
  8. Testing of computers and ensuring that computer systems are functioning properly.
  9. Physical setting up of computers and software system installation for various computer applications and programs
  10. Identifying and solving any problems that affect computer operating systems and troubleshooting routine problems and maintenance of servers
  11. Help in examination of network servers equipment and maintenance of networking systems
  12. Training staff and orienting them on how to use computer hardware and software systems
  13. Maintaining other computer peripheral devices such as printers, copiers, audio visual equipment’s and solving printing problems if they arise
  14. Coordination of computer maintenance with other Information Technology professionals
  15. Support drive imaging/ghosting for lab systems
  16. Carrying out other duties as you may be requested by management
  17. Participate in weekly meetings with Client Services staff to get updates and discuss Help Desk related matters; perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of two years of Desktop Support and/or Help Desk experience in a corporate or higher education environment supporting both office-based and remote end-users.

  • Candidate must have good communication and troubleshooting skills, the ability to multi-task in a demanding environment, and customer service skills.

    Candidate must have hands-on experience in the following areas:

     

    • Hardware support of intel based desktop and laptop computers
    • Desktop/laptop imaging solutions, support of Microsoft Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, 2008, Microsoft Outlook and office, Unix/Linux, Apple Mac OSX
    • Hardware support of network and local printers
    • Experience in installing Adobe products in Windows and MAC environment
    • Implementation and support of anti-virus solutions
    • Experience with handheld devices like Blackberries, iOS (iphones/ipads) and/or Android based devices

Desired Qualifications

  • MCP, MSDST, A+
  • Apple Certified Desktop Technician (ACDT)
  • Apple Certified Help Desk Technician (ACHDS)
