Brief Description of Duties

The Assistant Chief Academic Officer for Faculty Success is responsible for the leadership, coordination, and administration of faculty development initiatives for all academic units at the University of the District of Columbia. The individual in this position provides direction and leadership for the Director of the Center for the Advancement of Learning. The incumbent reports directly to the Chief Academic Officer and performs the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides leadership for the development and oversight of University faculty retention and professional development.
  2. Assists in the establishment and communication of broad expectations for faculty evaluation, promotion, tenure and professional development.
  3. Establishes and maintains processes which ensure consistency and quality of faculty evaluation, promotion and tenure decisions in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
  4. Assists the CAO in the review and assessment of tenure, evaluation and /promotion recommendations, appeals and grievances.
  5. Develops and disseminates periodic reports on faculty development engagements.
  6. Supervises the Director of the Center for Advancement of Learning.
  7. Coordinates the development of policies and procedures for faculty professional and leadership development.
  8. Coordinates the development of a professional development needs assessment for all colleges and schools.
  9. Coordinates the development of an annual report on University faculty scholarship and professional development activities.
Other Duties
  1. Identifies emerging trends and maintains currency of program design and methodology.
  2. Conducts & presents research on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) best practices
  3. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from an accredited institution of higher education
  2. Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience at the college level.
  3. Minimum of five (5) years academic administration experience (e.g. dept. chair, assistant dean, assistant Provost, learning and teaching center director etc.)
  4. Expertise in various student development and learning theories.
  5. Experience with building and delivering courses in Face to Face, Hybrid and Online Modalities.
  6. Five (5) years experience designing and delivering professional development to faculty and staff.
  7. Five (5) years experience developing and\or implementing faculty evaluation processes including the actual assessment of faculty portfolios.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
