Brief Description of Duties

University of the District of Columbia’s music program has a long and rich history in the D.C. community. The University was the first in the nation and remains the only university in the D.C. area to offer a concentration in gospel music studies. Coupled with our classical and jazz offerings, the music program provides a wide range of opportunities that serve the educational and artistic needs of our community. In addition, the University is home to the Felix E. Grant Jazz Archives, a world-class jazz research and resource center.

 

The University of the District of Columbia is seeking an accomplished and versatile pianist, experienced and forward-thinking educator and an effective administrator with a commitment to facilitating programming and outreach for the unit.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Teaches undergraduate courses in applied piano, pedagogy, collaborative piano, and literature;
  2. Teaches undergraduate courses in the history of African-American music;
  3. Performs in recitals and concerts with chorale ensembles, student vocalists and instrumentalists;
  4. Assists in the administration of the music program including facilitating outreach and recruitment activities;
  5. Maintains current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; and
  6. Participates in curriculum review, assessment and interdisciplinary programs or projects.

Other Duties:

  1. Provides academic advising and mentoring.
  2. Provides service to the University, College, Division, Program and Profession.
  3. Pursues external funding opportunities.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Terminal degree, doctorate preferred and/or equivalent professional experience at least equivalent to those required for a graduate degree in music.
  2. Accomplished and versatile pianist with evidence of a high level of well-rounded performing experience.
  3. Knowledge of music of the African Diaspora, particularly music of African American expressive traditions.
  4. Evidence of successful teaching experience at the college level.
  5. Demonstrated leadership, administrative experience and organizational abilities.
  6. Proven experience and success in grant writing and fund raising preferred.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
