Brief Description of Duties
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) Program Coordinator is responsible for providing programmatic leadership for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed) in the areas of nutrition education, food safety and physical activity for selected sites in the community. Incumbent is responsible for planning and teaching nutrition education, food safety, and physical activity classes to low income individuals and families within the designated service area in the District of Columbia. The SNAP-Ed Program Coordinator has the responsibility for tracking all teaching activities and participants with program reports. The incumbent will determine the needs of the individuals and families through focus groups, discussion-decisions sessions, partners, and surveys in order to strengthen current nutrition classes and develop and create new classes based upon the needs of the target audiences. Regular working hours will sometimes require evenings and weekends based on the class schedules for the participating groups. The incumbent is required to participate in orientation training, professional development, and self-study to develop and improve knowledge of food and nutrition subject matter, become more proficient in determining client needs, understanding various methods or reaching and teaching the clientele, develop proficiency in using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) teaching materials. The incumbent is expected to enroll and maintain an established number of sites each Fiscal Year.

The incumbent must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of efficiency, communicate effectively, work well under pressure and be familiar (or familiarize themselves) with the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of CAUSES, UDC, and program sponsors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Teaches series of nutrition and food safety lesson from SNAP-Ed Curricula and other approved nutrition education materials, 2) Apply group teaching as a major delivery method; 3) Work toward increasing the number of participants enrolled, 4) Use available resources to evaluate progress of participants, 5) Refine techniques of recruiting and
 
working with the groups that will encourage retention and motivation to modify behaviors, 6) Cooking demonstration/food activities, hands-on interaction children, teachers, and community residents. Maintain continuous participation by a reasonable number of SNAP-Ed clients.
2. Coordinates and implements Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) program throughout the District of Columbia.
3. Recruits and trains teachers and other community volunteers (train-the-trainer) to carry out planned objectives of the SNAP-Ed programs
4. Coordinates volunteer efforts for implementing SNAP-Ed Program.
5. Holds and attends meetings and conferences as needed to assist the Project Specialist and volunteers in implementing the SNAP-Ed program and its specific projects.
6. Cooperates with Project Specialist in developing the team approach to program development, implementation, and evaluation.
7. Plans and conducts community focus groups and surveys to determine the needs of the community.
8. Maintains effective working relationship with other extension staff (internally and externally), to provide knowledge of new technology, best practices, and evidence-based information as well as assistance in programming methods and procedures.
9. Provides leadership for the development and implementation of advisory and program committees.
10. Prepares reports for submission to the Project Specialist and Director of the Center for Nutrition, Diet and Health.
11. Maintains current professional competence through participation in SNAP-Ed, CNDH, and CAUSES staff development programs and opportunities and meetings sponsored by professional organizations.
12. Cooperates with other program units in planning and implementing interdisciplinary programs.
13. Acts as a liaison between project specialist and to media to promote SNAP-Ed in print and on broadcast outlets.
14. Maintains records reflecting the number of residence served monthly through the services of the volunteer leaders and yourself.
15. Conducts scheduled volunteer leaders training program for school and community volunteers to prepare them to conduct SNAP-Ed programs
16. Networks with the District of Columbia schools to start SNAP-Ed programs to implement to implement SNAP-Ed program activities.
17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements
1. Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, public health nutrition, or related focus area of the position, granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.
2. One (1) year experience working with individuals who come from low socio-economic backgrounds.
3. A valid driver’s license and vehicle preferred to travel within the city for lessons.
4. A proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive, outcomes oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties outlined in the position description.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
