Brief Description of Duties

Sustainability innovation is the process where sustainability considerations (environmental, social, and economic) are integrated into urban systems from idea generation through research and development (R&D) and commercialization. This applies to products, services and technologies, as well as new business and organizational models.
 
Urban Resilience includes the capacity of a community to prepare for, respond to, and recover from significant hazard threats with minimal damage to public safety and health, the economy, and security of a given urban area.
 
The Project Specialist for Sustainability Innovation & Urban Resilience combines these two concepts and conducts research, teaches academic classes, and develops, implements, and evaluates community education (Extension) programs that contribute in significant ways to building capacity to succeed in the green jobs market of the future that extends from health to the building trades to recreation hospitality  and the legal field and to the creation of innovative programs, products, and services and resilient urban futures. The successful candidate’s skills and interests will extend and contribute to coalescing extant strengths within CAUSES, the University, and the District of Columbia. The successful candidate will have strong understanding of education, research, and/or practice in green businesses and entrepreneurship, innovation, climate change, improvements and re-design of existing products as well as development & commercialization of new products and urban resilience.
 
The successful candidate will teach sustainability innovation studios and/or green business courses (and related courses) academically and throughout the District of Columbia, develop and teach courses in sustainable entrepreneurship and technology development, environmental design, technology, and graphic representation, develop peer-reviewed research and scholarship, and assume a leadership role in advancing sustainability within practice. The capacities to garner external funding and engage a wide-range of stakeholders beyond the University are desirable.
 
The Project Specialist for Sustainability Innovation and Resilience reports directly to the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD).  CSD is one of the land-grant centers of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Works closely with the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the AD of Land-grant Programs to identify research, teaching, and extension priorities in sustainability innovation and urban resilience.  . 
  2. Creates sustainability innovation, green business & urban resilience workshops, certificate programs and similar training opportunities for current & future CAUSES projects.
  3. Develop partnerships & acquires resources necessary to advance sustainability innovation, green business, and urban resilience throughout UDC and the District of Columbia. .
  4. Teaches one course per semester in CAUSES or the equivalent in research and/or community education programs (extension).
  5. Identifies priorities in sustainability innovation, green business and urban resilience and related research and community outreach foster regional, national and international recognition.
  6. Establishes a team approach to work that positions sustainability innovation, green business and urban resilience initiatives as an integral part of the Center for Sustainable Development, Land-grant Programs, CAUSES and university partners.
  7. Communicates program goals and desired outcomes as well as implementation procedures to the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development, the AD of Land-grant Programs, and CAUSES staff as needed.
  8. Works with faculty and staff advance business development initiatives across the five land-grant centers of CAUSES.
  9. Coordinates the annual Plan-of-Work with the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the AD of Land-grant Programs as required by sponsoring agencies.
  10. Represent the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the AD of Land-grant Programs in appropriate internal and external meetings as needed and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external constituencies. 

Required Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in Industrial Design, business, Industrial Technology, engineering, sustainable development, economic development or related or allied discipline Doctoral degree preferred.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years of related experience in an increasingly responsible academic and research position

  1. A proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive, outcomes oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties outlined in the position description.
  2. Demonstrated ability to develop, oversee, and assess effective programs.
  3. Excellent writing and oral presentation skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to interact with a broad range of constituencies and stakeholders within CAUSES and UDC as well as outside of the college and the university.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and interests.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as under the pressure of deadlines in a goal-driven, fast paced environment.
  7. Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, take initiative and exhibit creativity in implementing all responsibilities.
  8. Knowledge or ability to become familiar with the land-grant system, its mission, goals and objectives.
  9. Knowledge or ability to become familiar with federal funding agencies and local, regional and national stakeholders.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
