Brief Description of Duties

Incumbent functions as Rehabilitation Counselor in the Office of Counseling and Disability Services (OCDS) – in the Office of Student Achievement at the University of the District of Columbia – Community College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Analyzes reports containing medical and psychological data and interprets the relationship of such data to the educational needs of students with disabilities.
  • Uses computer software in data collection and record keeping.
  • Assists in the recruitment, orientation and registration of disabled students informing them of the educational opportunities at the University of the District of Columbia.
  • Provides comprehensive rehabilitative counseling to students with various types of physical intellectual and psychological disabilities.
  • Plans and evaluates the daily operations of disability services.
  • Maintains current and up-to-date records of individual counseling sessions with students receiving disability services.
  • Maintains individual students’ academic and services rendered records.
  • Consults with faculty in the provision of reasonable accommodations.
  • Arranges and coordinates services and outreach programs that meet the needs of students with documented disabilities.
  • Prepares and submits necessary budgets and reports.
  • Assists with or serves on university wide retention initiatives.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Attends conferences.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Local travel.
  • Maintains relationships with agencies (i.e. RSA, DDS) to keep abreast of activities and services for students with disabilities.
  • Make recommendations for additional services that the Community College should provide for students; i.e. technology and facilities.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as: Psychology, Sociology, Rehabilitation Counseling or Social Work.
  • Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling, Vocational Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, or related field
  • Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and/or Licensed Professional Counselor preferred
  • At least three years of experience working in the counseling field.
  • Experienced with Microsoft applications and comfortable with technology.
  • Proficiency in counseling skills, counseling theory, and ethics as outlined in the American Counseling Association (ACA).
  • Experience in providing counseling to diverse populations.
  • Experience working in the higher education setting.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
