Description
The Mortuary Science department of the University of the District of Columbia is seeking a dynamic, patron-centered individual with collaboration skills and experiences to support the Community College beginning Fall 2015.  The Assistant/Associate Professor, Mortuary Science, is a member of the Associate of Applied Science program and is responsible for teaching various courses. The individual also serves as the Program Director of the UDC-CC Mortuary Science programs. All core courses are held at the University of the District of Columbia Van Ness campus, 4200 Connecticut Avenue NW. However, there may be times the individual is expected to teach at more than one location.

Brief Description of Duties

The Assistant/Associate Professor will teach Mortuary Science core courses , provide laboratory and clinical instruction, must have knowledge of human anatomy, chemistry, pathology and blood borne diseases, recruit, advise and assist with the retention of students, and answer student inquiries in a timely manner.  The Assistant Professor must also have knowledge of the safe handling and disposal of hazardous compounds and infectious waste, laboratory safety requirements,  conduct a minimum of five office hours per week, help to develop and teach appropriate online courses, participate in the college governance process and college-wide committees, participate fully in curriculum development and revision, recommend textbook and other instructional materials, assist in the development of an effective means of assessing student learning outcomes in accordance with the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) standards, and advise the Mortuary Science Student Organization. 

Required Qualifications
  • Associate of Applied Science degree or its credit hour equivalent in Mortuary Science from an accredited program is required; as well, hold a Master’s degree in related field. An individual will be appointed as an Associate Professor if they possess a Ph.D. or MD degree. 
  • The individual must be licensed or eligible for license in the District of Columbia.
  • Applicant must have knowledge of current practices in the field, familiarity with accreditation standards of the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE), and knowledge of all state/District and federal laws, rules and regulations. 
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate
  • A record of scholarship and professional growth
  • At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor. (Community college experience preferred).Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.
 
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract
  • At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.
  • Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent. When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
