Brief Description of Duties

The incumbent carries out a variety of duties to spearhead and coordinate the fundraising and development efforts to support the programmatic vision and operations of the Law School.  The incumbent will engage and serve to help integrate the Law School’s development initiatives and efforts with the Office of Alumni Relations/Affairs.  Incumbent reports to the Dean.                     
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  
                                                                       

  • Identifies, cultivates and solicits alumni, organizations, foundations, etc. for major gifts;
  • Conducts market research and works with the Dean to establish fundraising goals and innovative strategies and goals for annual and capital campaigns.
  • Conducts market research to develop and implement strategic marketing and branding campaigns and solicitation strategies in support of fundraising efforts
  • Designs and develops promotional materials and brochures; Plans and executes major and minor events.
  • Creates, implements and supports major giving campaigns including scholarships, fellowships, experiential programs, and other support for the School of Law community, programs and activities.
  • Manages the portfolio of major and minor gifts and donor prospects
  • Coordinates operations related to fundraising to include but not limited to public relations, communication, outreach, tracking, accounting, reporting and analysis, office management and budgeting.
  • Writes grants and engages in creative outreach to increase fundraising prospects.
  • Identifies individual, law firm, corporate, government and foundation funding opportunities and collaborates with the Dean, the Dean of Experiential and Clinical Programs and the Alumni Director and develops cultivation strategies for the prospects.
  • Manages and enhances planned giving program; Coordinates and writes Direct mail packages.
  • Corresponds with appropriate foundation professionals, donors and prospects to develop and sustain productive working relationships to support the School of Law fundraising activities.
  • Assists the Dean to improve the public image of the School of Law and its programs.
  • Collects, analyzes and reports data; Prepares reports, presentations and proposals as required to internal and external community members, alumni, individual donors, foundations and others.

Required Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree and a minimum of seven years of progressive experience in institutional, event and individual and organizational fundraising to include direct solicitation.
  • Management/supervisory experience and familiarity with major law firms, preferred.
  • Strong and effective communication skills, both oral and written are essential.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a goal-oriented team environment.
  • Expertise, experience and a deep understanding of the importance of various forms of donor communication such as updates, newsletters or brochures.
  • Progressive and direct interaction with prospects and donors for cultivation and solicitations.
  • Proficient in the use of technology required and previous donor management software experience, preferred.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
