Description

The Assistant/Associate Professor for Architecture is responsible for teaching various architecture and related construction management courses and providing advisement to student majors.  All core courses are held at the Bertie Backus.  However, there may be times the individual is expected to teach at more than one location.  Emphasis is placed on Teaching Effectiveness, and on advancing the mission and vision of UDC-CC.  The individual reports to the Division Director for Math, Information Technology and Engineering. This is a 9-month, tenure track position.

Brief Description of Duties

  • Teaches courses in architecture and related courses in construction management
  • Assists with recruitment of new students, advises and assists with the retention of current students; answers student inquiries (emails and voice mail messages) in a timely manner
  • Engages in scholarly/professional activities and community service
  • Conducts a minimum of five office hours per week
  • Help to develop and teach appropriate online courses. Some experience with instructional technology and Blackboard
  • Teach during the day, evening, and/or weekend; may include more than one campus site
  • Participate in the college governance process and college-wide committees
  • Recommends selection of textbooks and other instructional materials
  • Ability to assist students in designing and negotiating job placement and internship opportunities
  • Familiarity with and conducts assessment of student learning outcomes (course and curriculum levels) in accordance with the standards of the College and Middle States Commission of Higher Education
  • Collaborate with Division Director/Dean in the development and revision of courses of study and curricula
  • Collaborate with university faculty to facilitate the smooth transition of students into a four year degree program
  • Implement the recommendations of the program review committee
  • Develop appropriate assessment of student learning at the course, program and College levels
  • Engage in activities that facilitate student achievement of learning outcomes, such as ongoing feedback, and consultation as needed
  • Submit required reports on student attendance and course progress according to published deadlines
  • Complete and Submit data summary reports on student assessments, results and action steps taken to improve student attainment of course and program learning outcomes
  • Populate courses in the TK20 Electronic Assessment System
  • Use the Learning Management System (LMS), Blackboard, to manage courses
  • Collaborate with appropriate Student Services personnel to address perceived student issues, which may require special attention
  • Engage in on-going professional development that promotes and maintains currency in discipline knowledge and instructional methods
  • Attend scheduled divisional, discipline, and general faculty meetings, as well as the faculty professional development day, convocation and commencement
Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in architecture or related field from an accredited institution. Expertise in one or more of the following areas would be highly valued: architectural design studio, construction management, including building construction and materials, and history and theory of architecture. Must have at least two or more years of college teaching experience, community college teaching experience preferred. A record of scholarship or noteworthy professional achievement in the area of architecture; professional licensure and/or relevant certification such as LEED accreditation and professional association membership.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the
following qualifications: 
  • An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  • A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  • At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor. Community College experience preferred.
     
    A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
     
  • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  • At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education. Community College experience preferred. 

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience in the discipline is limited or absent. When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
