Brief Description of Duties


The Communications Specialist, in the University of the District of Columbia Community College, reports directly to the Deputy Director for the Community College and is responsible for supporting marketing and communications initiatives and strategies for the Community College divisions. The Communications Specialist serves as a valued member of the University’s Communications Team and works closely with the University’s Office of Communications and Marketing in developing and implementing dynamic and creative marketing and communications plans to ensure increased visibility, brand recognition, and customer relevance for all Community College programs.

The incumbent works closely and cooperatively with the Deputy Director for the Community College, Deans, Associate Deans, Directors, and staff. The incumbent must be creative and progressive; a team player; work effectively and efficiently; perform duties with independence, initiative, and reliability; work well under the pressure of deadlines; and be familiar with or become familiar with the regulations, policies and procedures for marketing and communications as established by the University, the District of Columbia, and the Federal government.

Position may require individual to attend events and meetings or conduct errands at other college locations including Van Ness Campus, Backus Campus, Shadd Education Center, PR Harris Education Center, United Medical Center, and other partner sites. Events may be held off campus and sometimes after work hours and occasionally on weekends. Field and community work may require the incumbent to provide his or her own transportation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Participates in developing and implementing an effective marketing and communications plan for all programs in the college.
  2. Participates in creating marketing and communications materials to be shared with both internal and external stakeholders, to include brochures, newsletters, presentations, event support materials, electronic communications, and other collateral as needed.
  3. Continuously assists in maintaining the Community College website, meeting with college program managers and directors as well as interfacing with the office of Communications and Marketing and the Office of Information Services and Management (IT/ISM) as necessary to keep information accurate and current.
  4. Provides logistical and other support services for Community College-wide workshops, conferences and large-scale events.
  5. Assists with providing social media and photo coverage during events and a written accompaniment post-event.
  6. Assist with media and community relations, subscribing to relevant groups and listservs.
  7. Responsible for collecting lists of upcoming events for all program areas and for publishing and distributing a monthly calendar.
  8. Disseminates information/literature on Community College programs and activities at internal and external stakeholder events.
  9. Participates in college and University marketing-related campaigns and initiatives for recruitment and outreach.
  10. Serves as the Community College liaison to the University Office of Communications and Marketing, providing Community College program and activity updates, event highlights, and other written and graphic documentation and information as required.
  11. Represents the Community College in committees, working groups, and University meetings as requested by the Deputy Director, Deans, Associate Deans, or Directors.
  12. Collects and analyzes data on participant demographics, preferences, and stakeholders’ needs in each Ward in order to identify potential markets for land-grant outreach services.
  13. Works effectively and collaboratively with the Deputy Director, Deans, Associate Deans, Directors, and other faculty and staff within the college and the University at large as required by specific projects.
  14. Coordinates with University Offices of Communication and Marketing and Information Services and Management (IT/ISM) to ensure compliance with University branding standards, policies and procedures.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the work of the college.
Minimum Job Requirements
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or Graphic Design or related field.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and/or communications. Higher education experience preferred.

This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
