Brief Description of Duties

The Workforce Development Program (WDP) is a longstanding program of the university. Incumbent functions as the Director of Continuing Education for Workforce Development and Community Outreach, Community College of UDC and the University of the District of Columbia. The position works under the administrative direction of the Associate Dean for Workforce Development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 

  • Reestablishes the Continuing Education Program as a fee-based program to include educational programs for professional or personal development. The program will help residents of Washington, DC and the Washington Metropolitan area obtain academic, vocational and occupational education and training.

  • Establishes a fee-based continuing education program that offers courses that will meet the needs of individuals seeking to enhance their professional and personal development.

  • Establishes a detailed set of programmatic strategic goals and objectives that will be commensurate with the growth and changing economy in the Washington Metropolitan area.

  • Devises appropriate methods for securing fees or grants to support the program.

  • Identifies opportunities, trends, and significant program needs, and devises and maintains a continuous analysis and evaluation of continuing education needs.

  • Manages budgetary and fiscal operations through periodic analysis and review of the specific program budget objectives to assure that fees are collected, deposited daily in the cashier’s office and accounted for in the finance office.
  • Ensures that fiscal goals and objects are met to support program strategic goals and objectives.
  • In conjunction with the Associate Dean, Workforce Development and Community Outreach, ensures that the program operates within existing laws, guidelines, procedures and policies.

  • Manages the continuing education staff and ensures that they understand their duties and responsibilities as well as line of authority.

  • Evaluates the performance of direct reports and recommends promotions, transfers, leaves of absences, continued employment or terminations.
  • Evaluates the Continuing Education Program and makes recommendations to the Associate Dean for Workforce Development and Community Outreach for program changes and continuous growth.

Other Duties

  1. Acquires membership in local and national professional organizations that address the needs and issues of continuing education.

  2. Represents the university with appropriate professional associations, civic and community groups, governmental agencies and similar in-situations.

  3. Participates in meetings and conferences.

  4. Performs other related duties as assigned

MinimumJob Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with five-years of experience in education/higher education
  • Two-years of related experience working with continuing education programs

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
