Brief Description of Duties

The Assistant Director of General Education will provide technical expertise and oversight for building, assessing, and implementing a prescriptive and developmentally-ordered University-wide General Education Program. The Assistant Director will maintain faculty rank and remain active in teaching and scholarship. He/she will report through the General Director to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. His/her faculty performance will be assessed in concert with faculty dictates under the Master Agreement and/or Faculty Handbook. The prevailing candidate will coordinate the responsibilities of curriculum mapping, advising, and degree audit across the University’s undergraduate programs: the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences; the College of Arts and Sciences; the School of Business and Public Administration; the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; and the UDC Community College. The incumbent receives direction from the General Education Director and works the General Committee on broad policy objectives and program priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 

  1. Assists the Director and deans from all colleges and schools in the implementation and management of the technical aspects of the UDC General Education Program.
  2. Provides technical expertise to faculty in course assessment and degree audit.
  3. Informs Strand content and monitors the development of new and revised General Education courses.
  4. Serves as the Program’s BANNER and Degree Works expert.
  5. Teaches general education courses each semester.
  6. Supports the work of the University-wide General Education Committee.
  7. Supports the Director in developing general education program policies and procedures to include: course development, program assessment, curriculum revision, student advising, degree audit, faculty training, and workload assignment.
  8. Supports the Director in observing and providing feedback on teaching within the General Education Program.
  9. Supports the Director in developing and coordinating on-going General Education faculty training.
  10. Leads ongoing assessment of the General Education Program at the course, program, and integration to the major levels and communicates the results of the assessment to the University community through the Director and College/School deans.
  11. Sets a high standard of personal responsibility and character.
  12. Supports the Director in publicizing and promoting the benefits and features of the program to faculty, students, and staff across the University community.
  13. Assists the Director in developing regular progress reports for the deans, chairs, faculty, and Chief Academic Officer regarding the growth and development of the UDC General Education program.
  14. Assists the Director in developing and distributing communications regarding all aspects of the General Education program.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Ph.D. in a traditional general education field.
  2. At least five years teaching experience.
  3. Qualifications commensurate with an assistant or associate professor rank.
  4. An understanding of best practices in developing, implementing, and managing general education programs.
  5. Experience in university administration/coordination role preferred with specific expertise in advising, assessment, and degree audit.
  6. Knowledge and experience in general and liberal education including research and trends occurring nationally.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge and use of student information systems such as Banner
  8. Excellent written and oral communication skills
  9. Record of excellent interpersonal skills with students and colleagues in the higher education arena.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
