The Office of Academic Affairs of the University of the District of Columbia Community College is seeking a dynamic, patron-centered individual with collaboration skills and experiences to support the Department of Respiratory Therapy.  Specifically, this position will involve overseeing student learning outcomes for major respiratory courses.

Brief Description of Duties
The Assistant Professor for Respiratory Therapy teaches various respiratory therapy courses and will assist the program director and the clinical educator to oversee student learning outcomes for major respiratory courses. The Assistant Professor is responsible for organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of all laboratory inventory, program recruitment and admission for students enrolled in the respiratory therapy program. The individual reports to the Program Director. This is a 9-month, tenure track position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Teaches courses in respiratory therapy, including the lectures associated with clinical experiences
  • Conduct and supervise laboratory and clinical learning experiences
  • Collaborate with the Program Director and DCE to assure adequacy of laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Advising students
  • Evaluate evidenced-based student learning outcomes
  • Participate in department, college and university committees
  • Assess program effectiveness; and assist in the curriculum development.
  • Oversee the dissemination and collection of program applications of students seeking admission to the program.  Review applications for student eligibility, and participate with faculty in selection of students. Maintain communication with applicants to assure all required application materials are submitted on time.
  • Send notification to acceptance or rejection to applicants.
  • Conduct summer orientation for new students accepted to the program.
  • Make recruitment visits to schools and other venues.
  • Meet with drop-in students who come by to discuss their programs.  This includes in-sequence and out-of-sequence students.
  • Submit additional assignments as per Program Director
  • Maintain close interactions among all students enrolled in the program.
  • Conducts a minimum of five office hours per week
  • Adheres to college and program policies and procedures
  • Participates fully in curriculum development and revision
  • Recommends selection of textbooks and other instructional materials

Minimum Job Requirements
Master’s degree from an accredited college/university; Applicant must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist who is licensed by the District of Columbia, or eligible; have a minimum of four years clinical experience, and two years academic or clinical teaching experience in an accredited program.  Varied clinical experience with critical care emphasis and multi-credentialing is preferred.  The candidate should possess strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate participation in activities that promote the profession.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  • At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education. Community College experience preferred.
Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience in the discipline is limited or absent. When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
