Brief Description of Duties

The Project Specialist for Green Business and Social Entrepreneurship reports directly to the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD).  CSD is one of the land-grant centers of the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) of the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).  The project specialist designs, implements, and coordinates research and community education initiatives that advance business start-ups, business expansions, entrepreneurship, leadership skills, and private-public partnerships to improve environmental quality and opportunity in the District of Columbia.  Key areas of responsibility include program design, oversight, assessment and coordination and integration of relevant research and extension activities (AES and CES) with the academic program within CAUSES.  The Project Specialist carries out day-to-day activities in close collaboration with the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the Associate Dean of Programs to ensure alignment of all green business initiatives with the strategic objectives of CAUSES.  The incumbent must be a team player, work effectively and efficiently with diverse internal and external constituencies, perform all duties with a high degree of independence and initiative, communicate effectively, work well under pressure of deadlines and be familiar with (or familiarize themselves with) the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of CAUSES, UDC, and program sponsors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Works closely with the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the AD of Land-grant Programs to identify research and community education priorities in green business and social entrepreneurship to meet the needs of DC residents, agencies, and the private sector.
  2. Creates business plans for current CAUSES projects which highlights growth potential.
  3. Devises workshop or certificate programs for to train local residents how to start a green business.
  4. Develop partnerships (and Memorandums of Understanding) based on providing mentoring and assistance to interested partners focused on business development in exchange for goods and services.
  5. Fosters relationship with DC Department of Employment Services and similar government, public or private agencies regarding green job growth in DC.
  6. Teaches one course per semester in the Environmental Sciences and Urban Sustainability program of CAUSES or the equivalent in community education programs (extension services).
  7. Identifies priorities in green technology related research and community outreach and in environmental science education that foster regional, national and international recognition.
  8. Establishes a team approach to work that positions green business and social entrepreneurship initiatives as an integral part of the Center for Sustainable Development, Land-grant Programs, and CAUSES.
  9. Designs, implements, and coordinates green business programs that are effective and outcomes-oriented and support the mission, reach and effectiveness of CAUSES and UDC.
  10. Communicates program goals and desired outcomes as well as implementation procedures to the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development, the AD of Land-grant Programs, and CAUSES staff as needed.
  11. Works with faculty and staff advance business development initiatives across the five land-grant centers of CAUSES.
  12. Works with faculty and land-grant program staff to foster a collaborative environment conducive to excellence in research, outreach and teaching.
  13. Coordinates the annual Plan-of-Work with the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the AD of Land-grant Programs as required by sponsoring agencies.
  14. Represent the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and the AD of Land-grant Programs in appropriate internal and external meetings as needed and maintains strong working relationships with internal and external constituencies.

Required Qualifications
 

  1. Master’s degree in business, sustainable development, economic development or related discipline (green technology/business and/or social entrepreneurship).  Doctoral degree preferred.
  2. Minimum of four (4) years of related experience in an increasingly responsible academic and research position

  6. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as under the pressure of deadlines in a goal-driven, fast paced environment.
  7. Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, take initiative and exhibit creativity in implementing all responsibilities.
  8. Knowledge or ability to become familiar with the land-grant system, its mission, goals and objectives.
  9. Knowledge or ability to become familiar with federal funding agencies and local, regional and national stakeholders.

Condition of Employment:  Temporary employment is restricted to a one year appointment and employment may be ended at anytime with or without cause.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not in the collective bargaining unit.
