Brief Description of Duties

The primary responsibility of the Associate Dean of Admissions position is to direct and oversee the recruitment, admissions, enrollment, and retention of students to the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law (“UDC Law”). This position works under the general supervision of the Dean of the Law School. This position fulfills the full range of recruitment and selection activities and manages those aspects of the Law School’s marketing and financial aid plans. This position is part of the Law School’s Senior Management team, and includes supervision of the Admissions and Financial Aid Offices, public speaking, attendance at college fairs/programs, application review, on- and off- campus events, and special projects as assigned. This position also has responsibility for developing, coordinating, and leading an admissions network that will advance and coordinate the involvement of alumni and external contributors in the school’s overall enrollment goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Creates and maintains a service-oriented, knowledge-rich, student-friendly environment in the Admissions and Financial Aid Offices.
  2. Oversees Admissions Office activities necessary to the recruitment and enrollment of students and the maintenance of applications and relevant credentials. Oversees and coordinates non-degree, transfer and visiting student enrollments.
  3. Develops a comprehensive approach to financial aid and scholarship awards with the goal of improving enrollment and retention and increasing the enrollment of high performing students.
  4. Administers merit scholarship awards to new and continuing students and oversees LSAT/LSDAS and application fee waivers for applicants.
  5. Ensures the integrity, confidentiality, and document management of the application processes for Admissions and Financial Aid.
  6. Supervises, evaluates, and trains all Admissions Office and Financial Aid Office staff.
  7. Manages various personnel functions, including the monitoring of time and attendance, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and leave activities.
  8. Determines program and staffing needs, prepares budgetary recommendations, and monitors the expenditure of budgeted funds.
  9. Keeps abreast of applicable Federal, District, American Bar Association, Law School Admission Council, and University policies and guidelines to ensure that the Law School’s admission and financial aid activities are compliant.
  10. Keeps the University’s internal and external communities informed about current Law School admissions standards and policies.
  11. Ensures that appropriate and timely follow-up is made with potential and current applicants as they move through the process from recruitment to enrollment.
  12. Develops and implements with the Dean an annual marketing plan, including widespread, appropriately placed, mission-driven advertisement, community outreach, and alumni-involved activities. This work includes the development of an Admissions catalogue and other admissions literature in tandem with the Dean.
  13. Assesses the performance of new program components and recommends changes to enhance recruitment, retention, and improvements to student experience.
  14. Coordinates and collects information of interest to potential students from a variety of University offices.
  15. Develops and maintains contact with organizations external to the Law School, especially those offering relevant programming, to promote the Law School’s admissions objectives.
  16. Develops new media contacts and works with the Dean and the Law School’s communications staff to increase and improve the Law School’s public image.
  17. Ensures the Law School is represented during local, regional, and national admissions-related activities, including law school recruitment events like law fairs.
  18. Collects, analyzes, maintains, and reports statistical data on law student admissions, enrollment, attrition, and graduation patterns for administrative use in decision-making. Initiates targeted recruitment based on relevant research data.
  19. Ensures that adequate and appropriate recruitment literature and paraphernalia are available to distribute to potential students.
  20. Prepares reports and other materials for the Law School, the University, the American Bar Association, the D.C. Council and other entities as needed detailing demographic information about the Law School’s prospective students, applicants, admitted students, and registered students, noting any relevant trends and providing appropriate recommendations or conclusions based on available information.
  21. Develops and maintains templates for all Admissions and Financial Aid correspondence and announcements.
  22. Plans and implements a comprehensive recruitment program, including Open House events, informational and marketing events, and other related activities.
  23. Works in coordination with the Office of Student Affairs to ensure a seamless transition for candidates from applicant to admitted student status, including enrollment in 1L/new student orientation.
  24. Maintains active roles in and relationships with the Law School Admission Council, Law school admission-related endeavors and programs, community groups and professional organizations.
  25. Keeps the Law School community abreast of new recruitment approaches and programs.
  26. Convenes the Law School’s Admissions Committee to review applications for admission, and to review and keep current all admissions, retention, and financial aid policies, and related matters.
  27. Serves on University and Law School Committees and task forces as appointed.
  28. All other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Master’s Degree in Business Administration or related field required. J.D. preferred.
  2. At least five (5) years of progressive admissions and financial aid management experience at an institution of higher education.
  3. At least three (3) years of supervisory experience.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
