Brief Description of Duties
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB:
The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Education, Health and Social Work, Speech – Language Pathology Program invites applications for a full-time, nine month faculty appointment as a professor with a target start date of August 15, 2016. Candidates with credentials appropriate to an assistant or associate professor assignment will be given full consideration although a mid-level hire is desired.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities of the position include participation in teaching graduate courses, including SLP introductory courses and prerequisites for new graduate students without an undergraduate degree in speech-language pathology. In addition, clinical instruction in other areas of expertise, including technology assisted diagnosis and treatment will be required.
The incumbent will demonstrate other scholarly engagement inclusive of research, grant writing, publishing, and presenting, student advising, outcomes assessment, service to the program, department, college, University and community, and promotion of the program for the recruitment of students and clients.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- An earned doctorate in communication disorders, communication science, or speech-language pathology with expertise in speech across the lifespan.
- Current clinical certification in speech-language pathology from the American Speech – Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
- District of Columbia Licensure or eligibility for a DC License in speech – language pathology;
- Five (5) years of university teaching experience;
- Five (5) years of clinical instruction experience;
- Established record of scholarly productivity;
- Expertise in normal and disordered voice production, language and literacy, speech science, social language disorder, multicultural issues, prelinguistic developmental delay, aural rehabilitation , and/or deaf education; and
- Established record of graduate student advising/mentoring including directing research projects.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching and clinical instruction;
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Outstanding communication skills;
- Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity to variations across age, gender socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, cultural, national origin, and prior training and educational experience;
- Knowledge of the application of evidence-based assessment and treatment practices in communication disorders that cover the span and scope of contemporary practices with both child and adult populations
- Working knowledge of CAA policy, training, accreditation, and certification standards

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
