Brief Description of Duties

The Director of Development provides leadership and day-to-day management of the integrated program of development activities within the Office of Advancement at the University of the District of Columbia and for the UDC Foundation. They are expected to maintain a portfolio of approximately 75 prospective donors, open between 5-10 gift conversations at $25K+ per year, conduct 50 individual visits, and to raise $3-6M annually. Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, the Director of Development has duties that include but are not limited to:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build a community of philanthropic leadership to support the work of the University, managing a portfolio of major and leadership gift donors and working to develop a pipeline of new donors. 
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the annual giving, major donor, foundation and corporate giving programs, teams and consultants.
  • Ensures that the annual and long-term campaign goals of the UDC Foundation are met while monitoring progress toward the goals through portfolio review, fundraising database dashboard tracking, pipeline reviews and strategy sessions. 
  • Collaborates with Advancement leadership to design and implement a comprehensive strategy for the office advancement and development efforts that advances the priorities and opportunities for support of the University.
  • Provides direct supervision for development department staff and gift officers, including management and assessment of both individual and collective fundraising goals and objectives, as well as developing appropriate performance programs and evaluations.
  • Builds a strong relationship with the Strategic Initiatives team and other university entities and provides periodic updates to ensure timely, efficient and accurate responses to UDC Foundation proposal and white paper needs. 
  • Works closely with members of the Foundation Board of Directors (BOD) and specifically the Development Committee on establishing, monitoring and reporting fundraising initiatives.  This may include routine communication with directors on initiatives/activities, industry best practices and BOD involvement in fundraising.
  • Develops a communications and outreach strategy for the UDC Foundation fundraising efforts in coordination with Marketing and Communications and Alumni Relations teams.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships 

  • Member of the Advancement Leadership Team.
  • Works closely with members of the Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Provide guidance and leadership for a professional and line staff.
  • Manages the creation of a wide variety of collateral, including newsletters, case for support profiles, brochures, flyers, pitch decks, video scripts, website and social media content.

Other Duties

  • Assists in the preparation and filing required for progress and annual reports to funding agencies.
  • Prepares and updates a monthly prospect tracking tool for the Vice President of Advancement.
  • Develops and maintains excellent collaborative relationship with university faculty and staff to better understand the needs, impact, data, and budgets for our various programs, to create the strongest case for support possible.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • At least 7 years of fundraising experience that includes major gifts, campaign planning and execution or related and transferable experience from corporate, community or philanthropic organizations. 
  • Proven ability to achieve revenue goals, leveraging best practices, emerging trends, and innovations in securing philanthropic support.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of demonstrated leadership and staff supervisory experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of constituents, including donors, board members and volunteers as well as alumni, parents, friends, faculty, administrators and internal colleagues.
  • Experience in the use of fundraising and prospect research software and platforms such as Raiser’s Edge, Research Point, Foundation Directory Online, Foundation Search, and Crescendo Interactive. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in meeting major gift and campaign goals.
  • High energy level, with entrepreneurial, problem solving, flexible nature.
  • Must have a passion for higher education, social justice, and racial equity.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
