Brief Description of Duties

Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Learning Resources Division, the incumbent will coordinate functions of library services and serve as the primary librarian at the University of the District of Columbia’s (UDC) soon-to-be relocated branch campus (UDC Community College). Duties will be conducted in close collaboration with the team of librarians at UDC’s Main Campus library and will include reference, information literacy instruction, assessment, and outreach.

The incumbent will collaborate with academic faculty and librarians across UDC campuses in teaching and fostering information literacy skills relevant to the university curriculum and in developing students’ competence to access, evaluate, and effectively use electronic and print resources to acquire information. They will also serve as the primary liaison between the library and branch campus faculty and staff.

This is a twelve (12)-month position. Some evening and weekend work is required. We strongly encourage candidates who demonstrate a high degree of professional and pedagogical commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion to apply.

The successful candidate will initially work primarily at the UDC Main Campus until that time when the library at the Community College at the Bertie Backus location is open. At that time, the Community College Reference Librarian will primarily work at the branch campus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Research & Reference Services

  • Performs in-person and virtual reference and other related duties, including some evening and weekend hours.
  • Support students and faculty in conducting research and accessing materials, including through Consortium Loan Service, Interlibrary Loan, purchase requests, and sources outside the university.
  • Create and maintain online research guides for branch campus academic programs.
  • Provide technical assistance with a variety of computer issues, including using computers and internet resources, Microsoft Office and other similar software, and general troubleshooting.

 Information literacy instruction

  • Teach tailored in-person and online instruction to support the development of students’ information literacy and research skills.
  • In coordination with the Information Literacy Instruction Librarian and other librarians, develop print and digital learning materials, active learning activities, and digital learning modules.
  • In coordination with the Information Literacy Instruction Librarian and other librarians, foster the strategic growth of the library’s information literacy instruction program.

 Assessment

  • In coordination with the Reference & Assessment Librarian.
  • Gather and analyze quantitative and qualitative data on library functions and services at the branch campus.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement actions to increase the impact of the library in facilitating student and faculty success.

 Outreach

  • In coordinating with the Outreach & Reference Librarian:
  • Conduct outreach activities at the branch campus with faculty, students, and staff to ensure that library users are aware of collections, services, and technologies available to them; publicize library services, resources, and programs.
  • Effectively communicate the library’s goals, services, and news to various campus constituencies, as well as to outside constituencies as appropriate.

 General Responsibilities

  • Participate in Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC) Committees as assigned.
  • Keep current professionally by participating in relevant conferences, peer group meetings, etc., and conduct ongoing professional development activities for colleagues and staff.
  • Serve on departmental, university-wide, or consortium committees and task forces as assigned.
  • The incumbent is expected to meet those requirements listed in the Faculty handbook regarding research, scholarly and creative activities, and university and community service. This is a tenure-track position.


Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Computer proficient, including in Microsoft Office and standard office equipment.
  • Evidence of professional and pedagogical commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion strongly preferred.
  • Experience with outreach to student populations, campus communities, non-academic units, and/or community groups preferred.
  • Experience teaching and coordinating information literacy activities at an academic institution preferred.
  • Demonstrated evidence of involvement in professional research activities preferred.


                A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

 

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: 
A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
