Brief Description of Duties


The University of the District of Columbia, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) seeks candidates for a faculty member in Nutrition and Dietetics.  The ideal candidate will have teaching and practice experience in clinical nutrition, and familiarity with the accreditation standards specified by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

General Description Job

  • Manage the ACEND accredited graduate program (GP) including supervised experiential learning (SEL), assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of competency-based evaluation and work-readiness.
  • Serve as an advisor for capstone projects.
  • Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery systems and methods, including on-line learning, social media, portfolios to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence-based research and individual expertise.
  • Be familiar with accreditation standards of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Work collaboratively with the Department Chair, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, other Program Director, Program faculty, other academic units, CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers.
  • Perform student advisement, hold office hours, and perform course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.
  • Contribute to the University’s land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, Cooperative Extension, and key community stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery methods, including on-line learning, social media, portfolios to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence based research and individual expertise.
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with Blackboard and Banner systems.
  • Prepare comprehensive course syllabus, to include approved student learning objectives/outcome evaluation form.
  • Be familiar with the ACEND accreditation standards of Nutrition and Dietetics at the baccalaureate level.
  • Work collaboratively with the Didactic Program Dietetics (DPD), Department Chair, Associate Dean of Academic programs, Program faculty, other academic units, CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to professional Nutrition and Dietetics practice, especially related to community health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Perform student advisement, hold office hours, and perform course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.
  • Contribute to our land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, Cooperative Extension, and key community stakeholders.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Required terminal degree (Doctor of Philosophy - PhD/ Doctor of Clinical Nutrition - DCN).
  • Registered Nutritionist and Dietitian (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD).
  • Eligible for license in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and West Virginia.
  • RDN-AP (Advanced Practice) certification or DCN degree.
  • Recency of five years of consecutive advanced clinical experience in a hospital - Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC certified or eligible for certification within a year).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proven record of teaching, research, program planning and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with or ability to become familiar with the urban land-grant university system and its dual mission or academic excellence and community outreach.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate
  • A record of scholarship and professional growth
  • At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor. (Community college experience preferred).Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.
 
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract
  • At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.
  • Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent. When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
