Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences invites applications for one (1) full-time visting professor, 9-month faculty appointment in the Human Development Program with a target start date of August 16, 2024.  Candidates with credentials appropriate to assistant professor assignments will be given full consideration. 

The University of the District of Columbia is a public, comprehensive university with an urban land-grant distinction.  It is the District of Columbia’s only public institution of higher education.  It has historically been a minority serving institution.  The University serves approximately 5,600 students across its certificate, two-year, baccalaureate, masters, and professional programs.  The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty, staff, and students.  The resources of the National Institutes of Health, the Library of Congress, and the Consortium of Universities of Washington, DC offer endless supports for teaching and research within the discipline and collaboratively.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) offers a wide range of programs in education, languages, sciences, social sciences and the visual and performing arts. There are programs at the baccalaureate and master levels. In addition, the College fulfills its land grant mission through outreach programs and services that impact the lives of many citizens of the District of Columbia. Through its two institutes – Gerontology and Public Safety - CAS provides leadership through innovative programming that fosters better educational and developmental services for preschool children; improves the quality of life for senior citizens; and collaborates with other neighborhood groups and the Metropolitan Police to reduce violence in the city's neighborhoods.

The Human Development Program is housed in the Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences and offers a Bachelor of Arts degree.  The program focuses on the comprehensive care and education of children from birth to 5 years and professional interaction with their families. Upon completion of the Human Development program, students are prepared to be reflective practitioners and skilled in the care, education and service of children and their families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and for graduate studies in psychology, counseling, early childhood education, social work or a related discipline.  

The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and levels of work assigned to these positions but they are not necessarily all-inclusive. Tasks that are specific to duties and responsibilities related to this position are as follows:


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keep abreast of developments in the instructional and discipline areas by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, participating in professional conferences, and designing online materials to enhance academic performance.
  • Conduct research in a particular field of knowledge, and publish findings in professional journals, books, and/or electronic media that are consistent with the direction of the academic program.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom student-centered instructions and discussions.
  • Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.
  • Compile, administer, and grade examinations.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate students on topics of assigned academic course.  
  • Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
  • Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
  •  Select instructional support materials such as textbooks, DVDs, films, etc.
  •  Establish community partnerships and on-going relations.
  •  Supervise students ‘practicum and experiential learning activities.
  • Advise students on academic and career pathways.
  •  Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
  •  Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  •  Write grant proposals to procure external research funding.
  •  Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
  •  Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities.
  • Participate in campus and community events.
  • Act as adviser to student organizations.
  • Participate in program, division, college and university service activities.
  • Maintain currency in the use of software and technology in the classroom.



Minimum Job Requirements

Human Development program seeks a faculty member with academic qualifications and teaching experience in the core foundation and upper level courses of the discipline.  Applicants should have demonstrated skills in the utilization of technological research-based teaching tools.  Applicants are expected to demonstrate empirical research skills with publications and/ or recent graduate level projects.  A commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research collaboration as well as experience with student directed research projects and experiential learning activities.

  • Ph.D. in Human Development with a concentration or experience is highly sought. Consideration will also be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in Family Science or Education.
  • A minimum of three (3) years teaching Human Development, Family Science, or Education at the undergraduate college/university level; or a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a graduate teaching assistant, if a recent Ph.D. graduate.
  • Evidence of scholarly publications and presentations at discipline-related conferences and meetings.
  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to work collaboratively on research projects as well as serving on program, department and University- wide committees.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: 
A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
