Brief Description of Duties

Reporting to the Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the Assistant Vice President, Marketing and Communications will manage a high-performing team to ensure that a consistent brand message and image of the University is developed for internal and external audiences. The Assistant Vice President will work closely with the Vice President to develop and implement an integrated marketing communication and operational plan supporting the University’s strategic plan. This leader will help guide branding, communications, marketing, digital strategy, public relations, and organizational communications for the University across all channels and audiences. The role will have a comprehensive understanding of multi-channel marketing and integrated communications strategies to optimize reach and engagement and guides recruitment and enrollment activities. The Assistant Vice President is analytical with solid knowledge of marketing and enrollment management analytics.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive efforts to build and distinguish UDC's brand identity across all internal and external communications and marketing, including paid and earned media, websites, and social media channels.
  • Oversee the implementation of marketing strategy for schools, programs, and departments.
  • Deploy and launch paid digital media, as needed.
  • Manage and assess the performance of all initiatives and campaigns and adjust communications tactics as needed. Partner with Enrollment Management to support strategic initiatives aligned with student recruitment success.
  • Manage a communications/marketing ROI dashboard to track/evaluate the effectiveness of programs continually.
  • Supervising direct reports, managing their performance, mentoring them, and providing opportunities for their professional growth.
  • Monitor SEO and web traffic metrics; pivot and adjust strategy accordingly. Expand the use of digital analytics to evaluate and refine the Office's content creation strategies and practices.
  • Establish key performance targets, track and analyze campaign and content performance, assess and translate data into recommendations and plans for modifying and informing future campaigns.
  • Produce robust reports for department leadership that demonstrate reach and performance.
  • Monitor and leverage trends with current higher education technology and communication, design tools, and applications. Recommend and implement new features and functionality to grow brand awareness and support business goals.
  • Represent the Office and the Vice President as necessary on University initiatives and at events.
  • Research, analyze, and incorporate student and prospective student insights, program and market landscape, and outcomes into strategic communication plans.
  • Manage relationships with marketing-related vendors or consultants.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications, journalism, marketing, or similar field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Seven (7) years of related experience. Relevant experience must include at least 3-5 years of senior leadership/executive level managing a diverse team of professionals in a complex and decentralized organization.
  • Excellent copywriting and copyediting skills and a highly effective communicator with the ability to deliver creative content (text, image, and video) for diverse audiences
  • Proficient in Salesforce or another CRM with expertise in integrated automated email systems
  • Proficient in developing and managing paid digital media, including Google Ads and social media advertising
  • Experience with social media marketing, reporting and analysis
  • Demonstrated achievement in developing and executing multichannel strategic marketing and communication plans to achieve recruitment/sales goals
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing new systems, structures, and processes, with a successful track record of managing large departmental budgets and in achieving financial goals and results
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to prioritize and follow through effectively, a track record of achievement in meeting deadlines
  • Solid knowledge of SEO, keyword research, and Google Analytics

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
