Brief Description of Duties

The position serves as a Maintenance Mechanic at the University of the District of Columbia’s (UDC) Facilities Management Division. The position works under the authority of the Director, of Facilities Management. The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the universities plumbing systems Incumbent plans, directs, and coordinates a wide variety of tasks, projects, and maintenance repairs.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinates work activities and work requests for completion with the Maintenance and Operations supervisor.
  • Completes a variety of related work functions, which involves assigned work operations within the limits of policies and basic production schedules set by management as well as appropriate oral instructions.
  • Responsible for overall effectiveness and economic use of equipment and material to meet work production goals and quality standards.
  • Surveys buildings and perform maintenance on building systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, and mechanical systems.
  • Conducts general upkeep procedures and carpentry.
  • Ability to construct building frameworks, including walls, floors, and door frames. Ability to design and install shelving, window molding and drywall.
  • Paint assigned areas, installing drywall and carpet, and replace ceiling tile as needed.
  • Performs outside maintenance when required to include painting, paver repairs/replacement, landscaping maintenance (grass cutting), snow removal(shoveling) and apply pre-treatment to grounds as needed or whenever the contractor for the University is unavailable.
  • Repairs or replaces broken drainage lines, clogged drains, faucets, etc.
  • Conducts inventory to ascertain that supplies, tools, and equipment are properly accounted for and secured.
  • Installs, replace and repairs lighting, bulbs, lamps, ballast, and minor electrical equipment.
  • Locates and repair issues with plumbing systems (flushometers, valves, faucets, etc.).
  • Conducts inspections of the University facilities to ensure that the University is in compliance with District of Columbia codes.
  • Performs minor repairs and troubleshooting on temporary ventilation, dehumidification, refrigeration and other systems.
  • Responsible for responding to emergencies, which includes but not limited to answering after hour calls.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Other Duties
 
  • Follow instructions received from supervisors, and to meet deadlines;
  • Works along with other workers and setting the pace;
  • Demonstrates proper work methods;
  • Ensures that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations
  • Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during work
  • Maintains a current knowledge, and answering questions on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders)
  • Checks work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
  • Drive University vehicles to pick up or drop off furniture to/from different organizations.
  • They may be also asked to drive people to various locations around the campus which may, include the president of the University.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • The incumbent must have a minimum of three years’ experience in facilities maintenance.
  • The incumbent must have a high school diploma.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
