Brief Description of Duties

The Director of the Center for the Advancement of Learning is responsible for the leadership, coordination, and administration of teaching and learning initiatives as well as programs offered by the academic units of the University of the District of Columbia. The Director provides direction and leadership of all staff and operations for the Center for the Advancement of Learning and supports faculty professional development initiatives generated by the Office of the Chief Academic Officer. The Director reports to the Assistant Chief Academic Officer for Faculty Development, Assessment, and Innovation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervises the university Learning Management System’s (Blackboard) administrator and Instructional Consultants in the unit.
  2. Serves as a project manager and coordinator for OCAO related faculty professional development initiatives.
  3. Manages the process for online course development and implementation.
  4. Provides leadership for pedagogical innovation at the institution and effective integration of technology into faculty teaching practices.
  5. Facilitates the development of policies and procedures for online learning in consultation with OCAO.
  6. Develops and recommends a strategy for online degree programs/course offerings and provides feedback in the approval process.
  7. Assists university faculty with the development of undergraduate and graduate credit, and non-credit distance education offerings.
  8. Coordinates with the academic units, the learning and professional development needs of the academic faculty teaching and learning across delivery modes.
  9. Develops, in concert with the appropriate units, a distance education marketing strategy.
  10. Serves as supervisor for faculty members in the Center for the Advancement of Learning.
  11. Assists the OCAO with faculty development initiatives related high impact practices (i.e course design etc.) for student success.
Other Duties
  1. Actively seeks grant funding and research opportunities to support online learning programs and strategies.
  2. Identifies emerging trends and maintains currency of program design and methodology.
  3. Conducts and presents research on SoTL best practices
  4. Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. PH.D or Ed.D. from an accredited institution of higher education with a concentration in instructional design, online learning, or a related field in teaching and learning.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience at the secondary (high school) and/or post-secondary educational levels.
  3. Minimum of three (3) years supervisory/administration experience within an educational setting.
  4. Demonstrated success serving as a supervisor, team lead, or coordinator in a diverse academic environment.
  5. Demonstrated expertise in various student development & learning theories.
  6. Demonstrated expertise in building & delivering courses in Face-to-Face, Hybrid & Online modalities.
  7. Experience with academic program and curriculum creation.
  8. Expansive knowledge of the scope of education across delivery modes.
  9. Experience with digital education and instructional technology management.
  10. Knowledge of ADA and Accessibility Compliance for Instruction.
  11. Knowledge of and/or experience using the Quality Matters Rubric to build courses in the Blackboard LMS.
  12. Experience providing professional development training and/or workshops to educators.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
