Brief Description of Duties 

The Lab Engineer will assume the leadership role in School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and provide full support to the faculty and students in all laboratories and perform variety of tasks in the day-to-day operations of the laboratories. He/she will provide technical support for academic and research activities connected with the faculty and students of the SEAS at the University of the District of Columbia.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Assumes leadership role and provide support to Center of Nanotechnology Research and Education (CNRE).
  • Gains mastery in operating CNRE and other equipment and conduct experiment to support research projects.
  • Prepares training resources to teach students and other users about the safe and responsible utilization of CNRE resources.
  • Designs new equipment by integrating multiple equipment and software control programs.
  • Maintains the inventory of the supplies and safety gears to ensure smooth experiments.
  • Assists with the daily supervision of the activities in -SEAS laboratories and is responsible for maintaining the equipment in SEAS laboratories and safety of operation.
  • Provides support to the faculty and students associated with Center of Nanotechnology Research and Education (CNRE).
  • Provides supervision to student workers, guest researchers, and teaching assistants to deliver reliable and technically up-to-date laboratory experiences. Assist with tutoring students in Engineering.
  • Ensures service to students is available during the scheduled time of operation.
  • Maintains hardware and software in the labs.
  • Designs and conducts hands on activities for workshops and high school students to enhance their interest in STEM fields.
  • Conducts hands on activities to support outreach activities and workshops.
  • Prepares promotional materials for the CNRE.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports for the funding agencies.
  • Maintains inventory for laboratories, secure supplies, and consumables as necessary to support laboratory program.
  • Oversees the operation and maintenance of the equipment in the School’s laboratories
  • Work with other laboratory technicians, faculty, and administrators as necessary to deliver quality laboratory instructional experiences and timely support to the research activities of the department.   
  • Performs other duties assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements
 

  • Bachelor's Degree (Master's Degree preferred) in Physics or Engineering
  • Familiarity with a variety of the research field concepts, practices and procedures
  • Experience in operating vacuum systems, low temperature systems, and magnetic material measurements, preferred
  • Knowledge of the principles of mathematics and engineering fundamentals
  • Knowledge of mathematical computer programs and engineering programs such as LabView, and any design software such as AutoCad, CREO, SolidWork, etc., preferred
  • Experience in microfabrication technologies using photolithography and thin film deposition, preferred
  • Strong oral and written communications skills

Employment Benefits: Selectee will be eligible for health insurance and annual (vacation) and sick leave only. Part-time selectee will be eligible for annual (vacation) and sick leave on a pro-rated basis.
