Brief Description of Duties

Reporting to the Director of Student Life, the Associate Director of Student Life and Services is responsible for creating a dynamic, robust campus life experience for all students.  The Associate Director of Student Life and Services creates activities, programs and resources that foster student community and a sense of belonging, learning and leadership development.  The Associate Director of Student Life and Services works closely with students, serving as the advisor for Campus Activities Board, Fraternities and Sororities and Graduate Student Government Association providing organization oversight, training and mentoring students, and providing support designed to enhance the growth, learning, and success of all students. The Associate Director of Student Life and Services also works closely with faculty and staff advisors of fraternity and sororities, serving as a guide and resource.  The Associate Director of Student Life and Services assesses student engagement trends and collaborates with the Director of Student Life, university departments and community organizations to develop an engagement plan that is responsive to the interests, needs, and concerns of students and is aligned with the mission, goals and policies of the University and the Office of Student Life and Services

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement opportunities for student involvement, service, and learning that foster student community and a sense of belonging, learning and leadership development.  Develop co-curricular activities, programs and services, aligned with educational priority, that increase student involvement and function effectively to meet their educational mission consistent with University policies.
  • Advise campus activities board, fraternities and sororities, and the Graduate Student Government Association. Provide support and training to students and faculty/staff advisors to foster effective organizational management of campus activities board, fraternities and sororities and the graduate student government association, increase organization interest, membership and activity on campus and ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate and implement major events such as Welcome Week, Homecoming, Spring Fling, Student Leadership Elections, Leadership Retreat, Midterm and Final Week Programming, Campus Activity Board (CAB Week) and student awards ceremony to foster student involvement and development and vibrant campus life.
  • Assess student needs, review university and national data sets and evaluate outcomes of current programs and services.  Develop new educational, social, cultural, recreational programs, resources and out-of-classroom learning experiences to address gaps and to create pathways for involvement that promote the development of specified competencies.
  • Oversee the Campus Activities Board Chair during the allocation of student funds for approved clubs and organizations. Ensure Campus Activities Board is budgeting, and that allocation and disbursement of funds are timely. Maintain accurate records and write reports.
  • Maintain regular, positive interaction with students, follow-up with student concerns and refer students to university and community resources.
  • Liaise with faculty and campus leadership to develop partnerships that support co-curricular linkages, increase faculty involvement, strengthen programs and coordinate campus-wide events.
  • Develop a communication plan in collaboration with Director of Student Life to enhance use of social media and online platforms to promote student participation in activities and programs, build community and students’ connection to the university, monitor scheduled events, and more effectively coordinate activities with other university programs.
  • Coordinate travel for Campus Activities Board and Graduate Student Government Association and assist the Student Activities Specialist with clubs and organizations with travel as requested by the Director of Student of Life and Services. Schedule events that include certified caterers, entertainers and other vendors and make purchases on behalf of organizations the Associate Director advises. Travel with student leaders, clubs, and organizations as needed.
  • Assist the Director of Student Life and Services with developing policies, procedures, handbooks and resource materials to guide all aspects in Student Life and Services and ensure that students are aware of and following the guidance.
  • Assist in managing the online, interactive student engagement platform for student organizations.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in college student personnel, psychology, social work, education or related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years professional experience in leadership development, student activities, student organizational support and program planning within student affairs in a post-secondary institution.
  • Direct experience working with students from diverse backgrounds; an understanding of how these identities impact their transition into university life and a track record of creative, responsive and effective programming for a diverse, non-traditional student population.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
