Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia is seeking a full-time tenure-track associate or full professor of Graphic Design. Candidates should possess strong visual design skills, demonstrate experience working on original creative design and research, and have a background in Graphic Design, Web Design, or creative practice in industry. The graphic design concentration in the Art Program prepares students in design research and innovative platforms of 2D, 3D, interactive work, VR, and AR. Applicants should demonstrate strong teaching experience, including design studio and lecture courses in Graphic and Web Design with a focus on typography, design, web design, coding, UX/UI, motion graphic, and animation. Experience in teaching project-based classes focusing on creative visual representation, branding strategies, and prior professional experience in the field is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, an ongoing artistic studio practice, and creative research.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Instruction of web design and UX/UI for graphic design majors
  • Instruction of moving image and/or animation courses for Graphic Design and Art majors
  • Curricular design
  • Computer and Design Lab oversight
  • Advising undergraduates
  • Service to the University community
  • Professional development

Minimum Experience/Training:

  • Demonstrated expertise and skill in web design, new media, and motion graphics/ animation.
  • Three years of teaching and professional experience preferred.
  • The successful candidate must be willing and able to teach in both the traditional face-to-face and blended (hybrid) format.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to maintain active professional development activities and service to the Department and College. Committee work is expected.


Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA in Art / Graphic Design / Visual Communications, Master of Graphic Design or related field.
  • Evidence of innovative professional activity and teaching experience.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

 

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Residency Preference: 
A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
