Brief Description of Duties


The Human Resources Assistant is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day administration of general staffing, recruitment, compensation, training, terminations and off boarding. The Human Resources Assistant works directly with management and assists Management with the development and implementation of HR initiatives and special projects. The successful candidate must have a strong attention to detail, be able to multi-task and have experience in two or more areas within Human Resources. This position communicates and executes HR services, programs and procedures that respond to the different needs and concerns of their customers. The incumbent assists with developing, recommending, establishing, and communicating Talent Management programs and procedures, which recognize and respond to different needs and concerns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Administers and coordinates staffing and recruitment activities utilizing the Applicant Tracking System and other technology.
Assists in the University’s recruitment and placement services. Answers questions relating to appointments, processes and status of job openings and positions.
Posts new job openings and attends community and/or diversity organizations, colleges, and local employment driven events and job fairs for presentations, recruiting and promoting our employer brand.
Assists with day-to-day human resources transactions and tasks.
Under guidance, refers suitable candidates to managers for consideration. May conduct phone screens and reference checks.
May lead recruitment and selection efforts and refer suitable candidates for job level appropriate positions.
May assist with processing new hire actions and answering inquiries from managers and employees pertaining to HR transactions.
Participates and interfaces with classification/compensation to track new and revised positions.
Prepares new employee paperwork, sets up official employee HR files, coordinates new employee orientation and participates in orienting new employees.
Completes I-9 employment eligibility through e-Verify and background checks.
Assists with conducting research and verifies records and processes service computation date reports.

Other Duties

Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Certifies and prepares employment verification forms.
 

Minimum Job Requirements

High School diploma required; Associate’s degree preferred.
At least three (3) years of progressively responsible staffing or human resources experience or any equivalent combination of experience and education and/or training.
Experience with Applicant Tracking and HR Information Systems highly desired.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
