Brief Description of Duties
Under the general supervision of the Chief Student Development and Success Officer at the University of the District of Columbia, the Director of Health Services will have the responsibility and authority to develop, implement, coordinate, evaluate and provide overall management to the University Health Services Program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops, implements, and evaluates overall activities for health maintenance and health promotion on the university campus.
- Works and interacts directly with the Chief Student Development and Success Officer and university personnel to identify and assess health problems, initiate appropriate investigations and submit recommendations.
- Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and determines need for development and implementation of polices, procedures and changes in techniques and methods at the Health Services Unit to ensure achievement of satisfactory student health outcomes.
- Participates in coalitions, advisory committees, and task forces that facilitate achievement of work and project objectives of Health Services, Division of Student Development and Success and the University community.
- Establishes and maintains intra and interagency agreements which promote communication and networks between the university health programs and health services in the community.
- Supervises, coordinates and monitors the day-to-day activities of Health Services staff and consultants; coordinate appropriate malpractice insurance and certifications of staff training/qualifications such as CPR, First Aid, and AED (defibrillator) use.
- Develops and monitors plans & play an integral role in disaster response and mitigation.
- Responsible for budgeting, procurement and requisition of supplies, equipment and other biological supplies, needed for the health center.
- Assists with clinical and disease management of patients who come to the health center and also serves as a resource for training new employees and providing clinical support for clinicians employed at the health center; provide preventive healthcare programs to campus community and make appropriate referrals to off-campus resources.
- Responsible for the management and evaluation of the Student Health Insurance Program (enrollment, billing, coding, reimbursements, invoicing insurance carriers, etc.) in consultation with the Chief Student Development and Success Officer.
- Facilitate workshops for new student orientation, resident assistants, student leaders, faculty and staff.
- Assure compliance with ACHA standards of care and AAAHC accreditation requirements.
- Oversee the maintenance of the Electronic Medical Record system; ensure confidentiality of information in compliance with FERPA and HIPPA requirements.
- Interpret, implement and monitor compliance with District of Columbia and federal laws related to healthcare delivery including medical staff credentialing, immunization requirements, reporting of epidemics/contagious diseases, and other public health matters; represent the university to the DC Department of Health, Centers for Disease Control and other external agencies.
- Ensure that all equipment and supplies are in good working order and calibrated according to manufacturer’s guidelines, including emergency response equipment.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Master’s degree in nursing with a certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Recent experience as a health care provider and supervisor n a primary care setting, preferably in an educational institution.
- Able to demonstrate strong attention to detail with regard to record keeping and correspondence.
- Demonstrate commitment to serving students with diverse backgrounds, interests, goals and abilities.
- Demonstrate experience in health education and health promotion activities.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with proficiency in computer skills such as Word, Excel, etc.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
