Brief Description of Duties

The Student Success Specialist of the University of the District of Columbia, Community College (UDC-CC) reports directly to Dean and is responsible for providing front-line customer service and working with students from recruitment through completion of course/program and beyond. Further, the Student Success Specialist will coordinate the seamless transition from certificate Workforce Development programs to the Associate degree programs offered within UDC-CC. This individual will provide timely and accurate academic advising and will interpret certificate program and Associate’s degree program requirements. The Student Success Specialist carries out day-to-day program related activities as well as strategic objectives and is committed to the continuous improvement of all Workforce Development and Associate’s degree Programs. The incumbent may be required to travel between the various UDC-CC sites

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists students with guidance in course selection process in keeping with the students’ majors, interests, values, and abilities.
  • Interprets and explains college and university policies and procedures and presents educational information to new and continuing students.
  • Provides academic advising and other services to support student retention and success.
  • Develops programming and outreach activities related to student success initiatives.
  • Builds rapport and understanding of students that will furnish opportunities to support and guide students to post-secondary education.
  • Works with University staff to foster a collaborative environment conducive to excellence in advising, research and outreach.
  • Monitors academic progress of students; analyzes progress reports from instructors; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance; records findings in appropriate database systems.
  • Identifies options for students to satisfy specific degree/certificate requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on petitions and adjustments to students’ programs of study.
Other Duties
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with the Deans, and other faculty and staff to expand and solidify effective working relationships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 Minimum Job Requirements
  • Master’s degree required Education, Public Administration, Sociology or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two (2) years of experience with emphasis on academic advising, student success, and retention.
  • Background in student support services preferred.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
