Founded in 1851, the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), is an 1892 Land-Grant university and is the only public institution of higher education in the Nation's Capital. The University’s mission and strategic vision support its unique designation as an urban public land-grant and historically black college and university (HBCU). The University has a student population of approximately 3,600.  Over 200 full-time and approximately 300 adjunct or visiting faculty support students in 81 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in CAUSES, the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Public Administration, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the University of the District of Columbia-Community College and the David A. Clarke School of Law. The law school is one of only six accredited HBCU law schools in the nation. UDC continues to transform itself over time to meet the changing needs of its students and the community.

The University of the District of Columbia Community College's (UDC-CC) Office of Academic Affairs, which has oversight of 21 associate degree programs, is seeking an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. This dynamic and innovative leader will be responsible for managing, overseeing, planning, and/or collaborating on the development and implementation of a variety of academic initiatives that include curriculum development, and implementation, program review, student advocacy, faculty professional development, and innovation, adjunct faculty employment and evaluation, strategic planning related to personalized learning, project-based, competency-based education, and other projects that fall under the umbrella of the Office of Academic Affairs. The incumbent reports directly to and works closely with the Dean of Academic Affairs, to advance the vision and mission of the Community College. 

Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia Community College is seeking a dynamic and innovative leader for its Office of Academic Affairs. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will be responsible for managing, overseeing, planning, and/or collaborating in a variety of academic initiatives that include student academic issues, policies governing adjunct faculty employment and evaluation, strategic planning related to competency-based learning and academic innovation, professional development, and other selected issues that fall under the umbrella of the Office of Academic Affairs. The incumbent reports directly to the Dean of Academic Affairs, who identifies administrative problems and outlines assignments. The essential duties and responsibilities of the position are as follows:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development of practical planning for short- and long-term growth and coordination of academic programs and the community college as a whole;
  • Coordinates academic processes for the community college, including course scheduling and evaluation of adjunct faculty;
  • Reviews courses schedules before publication in collaboration with the program leads;
  • Collaborates with program leads on cancellation and consolidation of courses as needed to ensure the efficient use of faculty resources;
  • Serves as the liaison between and among the academic departments, the Registrar's Office, Student Accounts, Office of Admissions, Office of Financial Aid, and the Office of Student Development and Success;
  • Works closely with the Dean and Associate Dean in the management of the day-to-day administrative functions of the Office of Academic Affairs, focusing on academic operations and students' retention and success;
  • Collaborates with other College units to help ensure a seamless transition of students from the Community College to the University;
  • Addresses student academic issues including but not limited to registration, the course holds, grade appeals, grievances, and classroom/faculty issues;
  • Coordinates the First-Year Seminar program, including the hiring of instructors. Assists the Dean of Academic Affairs with the fulfillment of Human Resource policies related to adjunct hiring and overseeing budget related to adjunct salaries and special projects;
  • Coordinates with the UDC Judicial Hearing Officer and Campus Safety on student behavioral issues;
  • Coordinates with the Director of Operations for needs related to faculty workrooms, classroom, and academic equipment maintenance;
  • Plans and manages space use in the College in collaboration with the Director of Operations, University Facilities and Registrar;
  • Assists with special projects in Academic Affairs related to new program development, assessment, accreditation, professional development, and academic innovation;
  • Supervises administrative staff and student workers to ensure the quality and quantity of projects and support services;
  • Contributes to the creation of systems, structures, and policies for academic affairs in UDC-CC;
  • Providing course scheduling and management support to the Dean, Division Directors, and Program Directors/Coordinators;
  • Monitor course enrollments during registration periods and trends over time to ensure course offerings are aligned with the degree programs and are sufficient in number to meet student needs to support retention and progress to graduation;
  • Assisting with handling student issues, including grade appeals, academic integrity violations, grievances, and letters of recommendation; assists in the planning of and allocation of funds for professional development for division, adjunct faculty, and staff;
  • Addressing operational academic and administrative concerns as directed by the Dean;
  • Serving on-campus and college committees as assigned;
  • Manages the review and completion of graduation audits in collaboration with program leads;
  • Coordinates observations and evaluations of adjunct faculty in accordance with procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master's degree required (Doctorate is strongly desired).
  • Minimum of five years of teaching experience at the college level.
  • Experience with educational administration.
  • Demonstrated success working in or with a diverse academic environment.
  • Experience using Banner Ellucian, Degree Works, and EAB Navigate a plus.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
