Brief Description of Duties

The U.D.C. Student Center serves as a "hub" for meetings, conferences, and gathering space for campus student and departmental organizations. The Associate Director, Student Center is responsible for the daily operations of the Student Center. Duties include facility maintenance, student employee development program, event production, and assessment. The Associate Director reports to the Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages the day-to-day operation and upkeep of the U.D.C. Student Center. Collaborates with Facilities and external vendors regarding routine and emergency maintenance. Liaisons with U.D.C. Police, Perkins Management Services (Dining/Catering), Janitorial Services, Information Technology, Telecommunications, and building tenants. Serves as department essential staff.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of facility use policies and procedures. Has responsibility for interpreting administrative policy for users of the facilities. Provides high-quality customer service to patrons utilizing the facility, its services, and hosted events.
  • Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates administrative and student staff necessary to carry out operations. Develops and implements the department’s student employee development program (staff training, social events, in-services, and team-building initiatives) that complements department student learning outcomes. Supervises student Operations Leads in managing evening/weekend building operations and peer area management.
  • Serves as the department’s assessment coordinator, including management of student learning outcomes, annual assessment projects.
  • Research new and innovative operating strategies, and initiatives to recommend to the Director for integration into departmental operating procedures and strategic plan.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned that are related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of professional experience in Student Activities and/or Student Center/College Union operations.
  • Direct experience working with students from diverse backgrounds; an understanding of how these identities impact their transition into university life and a track record of creative, responsive, and effective programming for a diverse, non-traditional student population.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience over student employees.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to listen, clearly articulate thoughts/directions/expectations, and develop reports/proposals and make presentations.


Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is not part of the collective bargaining unit.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
