Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Arts and Humanities, and Digital Media Program is seeking an accomplished media professional for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Digital Media.  Responsibilities include teaching required multimedia journalism courses, performing service duties, advancing a scholarly research agenda, and maintaining professional productivity.  Candidates should be prepared to teach multimedia journalism- and digital media production courses.  Teaching will be conducted primarily in a multimedia and lab environment with opportunities to develop online, hybrid, and hyflex course options. The prevailing faculty member will assist the Digital Media program with assessment and ongoing curricular revision to meet the changing demands of twenty-first century media specialists.  This includes supporting and developing intersections and cross-listings with other programs in the division, particularly with English and Graphic Design in Arts. This faculty member will foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration, in the program and across the division, to better share the importance of media and the beauty of the arts and humanities with the larger campus community. Other duties include serving on program, division, college, and/or university committees, maintaining an active creative- and research agenda, working collaboratively with program and division faculty, performing service, administrative, and assessment-related tasks to enhance the quality of the program. Engagement in diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service is strongly preferred. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides student supports (advising, mentoring, co-curricular design) across Digital Media BA degree
  • Curriculum development emphasizing cross-discipline integration of new media technologies and multi-platform journalism
  • Teaches oral communication and technology courses in the Interdisciplinary General Education Program (IGED)
  • Develop new course offerings and co-curricular engagements that serve students across the Division of Arts and Humanities
  • Participate in curriculum review, assessment, and ongoing development of curriculum
  • Maintain a productive program of research and professional activity and publication
  • Provide service to the university, college, division, program, and profession
Minimum Job Requirements 
  • Significant professional experience in news writing and editing, broadcast reporting, visual journalism, and digital media.
  • At least 3 years of experience teaching at the college level.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in professional video production techniques.
  • Knowledge in the integration of theory and practice in journalism education is strongly preferred.
  • Evidence of a well-developed professional and research platform.
  • Active visibility within professional networks.    
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  • At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.
Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.
When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
