Brief Description of Duties
The Associate Professor and Department Chair of the Department of Architecture and Urban Sustainability at the University of the District of Columbia's College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences plays a pivotal role in academic leadership and administration. They are responsible for overseeing the department's strategic direction, curriculum development, and faculty management. The incumbent contributes to teaching and research in architecture and urban sustainability, guiding students and advancing knowledge in sustainable design, urban planning, and environmental stewardship. The role integrates academic excellence with practical applications, preparing students to address contemporary urban challenges through innovative and sustainable solutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach value-inclusive design studios in the undergraduate (B.S. in Architecture) program, as well as lecture and seminar courses in their area of expertise for the undergraduate and NAAB accredited graduate (M. Arch.) program in Architecture and Community Planning, or other relevant courses as assigned.
- Conduct research and scholarly activities in an area of Architecture and Community Planning, and collaborate with CAUSES academic, land grant, and university experts. Applicants should have established research interests and/or a record of publication, teaching, and service in any of the following areas, but not limited to: design innovation, urban sustainability, sustainable architecture, building technology, digital fabrication, urban planning, development and community design, and landscape architecture and nature-based built environment.
- Engage students in land-grant and community-centered activities to prepare them for entry-level positions in architecture and graduate level scholarship.
- Work with students to plan and mentor research and service-learning experiences that stress the experiential, active learning and development of critical skills which are the focus of the Architecture and Community Planning.
- Advise students and participate in department and university service.
- Develop and maintain an awareness of urban planning, urban sustainability, and urban architectural issues in communities in the District of Columbia.
- Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes. Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery methods, including on- line learning and social media, to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence-based research and individual expertise.
- Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean, Department Chair, Program faculty, other academic units in CAUSES, land-grant programs, as well as with District of Columbia agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to professional Architecture practice.
- Contribute to our land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, Cooperative Extension, and key community stakeholders.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Terminal degree in Architecture or related field (PhD preferred).
- Practice experience in Architecture, Urban Planning, or a related field.
- Demonstrated teaching excellence with three or more years of collegiate-level teaching experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven record of teaching, research, and design thinking/problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with and adherence to the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accreditation standards, demonstrating the ability to create courses and student experiential learning experiences that respond to current standards, but also anticipate the future and evolving needs of the profession.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and proactive, outcomes- oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following
qualifications:
- An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
- A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
- At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.
Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
