Brief Description of Duties


The Clinical Staff Assistant assists students and faculty in the David A. Clarke School of Law clinical program with administrative and paralegal activities associated with the operation of the program.  The Staff Assistant assists the Managing Attorney and the Associate Dean for Clinical & Experiential Programs and provides support for clinic students and faculty.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports and ensures the administrative operations and professional infrastructure for the UDC Law clinical programs in keeping with ABA and other professional standards and best practices through administrative and paralegal support
  • Provides secretarial support for litigation and non-litigation activities to students and clinical faculty as needed, including but not limited to:  typing documents; processing the mail daily, and financial and budget tracking and reporting
  • Provides logistical support regarding clinic equipment, technology, room reservations, food requests
  • Maintains, provides support, and assists with training for our case management system FileVine, as well as conducting conflict checks
  • Processes student forms for Conflict Disclosure, Clinic Match, ALWR requirement, student practice certifications, timesheets, etc. for clinical students
  • Makes appropriate referrals for legal assistance to applicants for services
  • Assists clients with completing forms and simple documents
  • Provides notary public services for clinic students and clients
  • Provides and/or arranges oral interpretation and written translation services (English-Spanish)
  • Other duties or special projects as assigned by the Managing Attorney, Associate Dean, and Clinical Professors


Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, paralegal studies, or related field.
  • Four (4) years of related office experience in a legal, government, or non-profit setting; paralegal experience highly desirable
  • Prior experience working with or a commitment to serving, low-income communities
  • Proficient oral and written Bi-lingual Spanish desirable

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
