The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences invites applications for one (1) faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor of Psychology with a clinical focus in the Psychology Program. The target start date is August 16, 2019.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) offers a wide range of programs in education, sciences, social sciences, and the visual and performing arts. As UDC’s largest college, CAS is home to 24 degree and certificate programs. In addition, the College fulfills its land grant mission through outreach programs and services that impact the lives of many citizens of the District of Columbia. CAS provides leadership through innovative programming that fosters better educational and developmental services for preschool children; improves the quality of life for senior citizens; and collaborates with other neighborhood groups and the Metropolitan Police to reduce violence in the city's neighborhoods.

The Psychology program is housed in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences. It offers a Bachelor of Science degree and prepares students with the skills and values required to address urban societal issues as competent, ethical, and empathic professionals. The degree is also the pathway to graduate and professional study and entry level employment in research or psychology-related areas.

General Description of the Job:

The Associate Professor of Psychology - Clinical Focus will be responsible for teaching core undergraduate courses in the Psychology program and possess specific expertise in the biological and sociological bases of human behavior focusing on Neurophysiology, Neuroanatomy, and Social Psychology. The ideal candidate must be able to design and supervise capstone research projects for undergraduate psychology students.They are expected to participate in outreach activities to federal, state/local, and community stakeholders. Other duties include development and the monitoring of clinical experiential activities in addition to participation in program, division, college, and university service activities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in Psychology, specifically Neuroscience Lecture & Lab, Sensation & Perception, Psychopharmacology. Courses in Social Psychology include Psychology of Multicultural Relations, Psychology of Human Sexuality, Psychology of Racism and other core Psychology courses.
  • Supervise capstone research projects in Senior Seminar and evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, and papers using rubrics and other student-centered approaches.
  • Develop and monitor clinical and experiential student centered activities.
  • Conduct research in the discipline, and publish findings in professional journals, books, and/or electronic media that are consistent with the direction of the academic program.
  • Keep abreast of developments in their instructional area by reading current literature, collaborating with colleagues, participating in professional conferences, and designing online materials to enhance academic performance.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom student-centered instruction and discussions.
  • Maintain student attendance records, grades and other required records.
  • Advise and mentor students on academic and career issues including undergraduate internships in the discipline.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  • Write grant proposals to procure external research funding.
  • Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, program, division, college matters, and academic issues.
  • Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities.
  • Maintain currency in the use of software and technology in the classroom.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience from an APA accredited program and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
  • Minimum of six years of experience teaching Psychology courses at the college/university level.
  • Minimum of five years of demonstrable experience in clinical interventions with children & young adults.
  • Knowledge of the core areas of the discipline of Psychology, specifically the areas of Neuroscience and Social Psychology
  • A record of successful teaching to undergraduate students and a philosophy of instructional pedagogy that is student-centered
  • Proven ability and background in clinical practice.
  • Demonstrated excellence in pursing external research funding as part of a program-wide effort to develop a strong research infrastructure
  • Ability to mentor undergraduate students in research activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general principles and methods for curriculum design, teaching, and instruction for individuals and groups of undergraduate students, and the measurement/assessment of learning effects
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • A demonstrated work ethic that promotes teamwork, organizational leadership and collaboration with colleagues and faculty from external stakeholders including community members, government agencies, program, division and University-wide committees.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with diverse populations both in the classroom and in the community while showing sensitivity to variations across age, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, cultural, national origin, sexual identity or orientation, as well as prior training and educational experiences.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
