Brief Description of Duties

The Department of Architecture and Urban Sustainability at The University of the District of Columbia in the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) seeks candidates for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Urban Sustainability, to begin in the 2023-2024 academic year (approximately August 16, 2023).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


This position requires the Assistant/Associate Faculty Member to:
 
  • Direct the undergraduate Urban Sustainability program and teach courses in the undergraduate and graduate level programs, or other relevant courses as assigned.
  • Conduct research and scholarly activities in Urban Sustainability, and collaborate with CAUSES academic, land grant, and university experts with an emphasis on one or more of the following: urban sustainability and ecology, sustainable land use and infrastructure technology, urban planning, development and community design, landscape design and the nature-based built environment, and energy, climate, agri-food systems and environmental science, policy and governing regulations.
  • Engage students in land-grant and community-centered activities to prepare them for entry-level positions in urban sustainability and graduate level scholarship.
  • Work with students to plan and mentor research and service learning experiences that stress the experiential, active learning and development of critical skills which are the focus of the Urban Sustainability program.
  • Advise and mentor students and participate in department, college, and university service.
  • Develop and maintain an awareness of urban sustainability, urban planning and urban
  • challenges in communities in the District of Columbia (DC).
  • Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with a variety of instructional delivery methods, including on- line learning and social media, to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence-based research and individual expertise.
  • Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean, Department Chair, Program faculty, other academic units in CAUSES, land-grant programs, as well as with DC agencies and service providers to effectively address DC and national program priorities related to urban sustainability practice.
  • Contribute to the university’s land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, Cooperative Extension, and key community stakeholders.


Minimum Job Requirements
 

  • Terminal degree in Urban Sustainability, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Environmental Science, Agriculture and Food Systems Science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence with three or more years of collegiate-level teaching experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Proven record of teaching, research, and design thinking/problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrating ability to create courses and student experiential learning
  • experiences that respond to current standards, but also anticipate future market-driving and evolving needs in Urban Sustainability.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and proactive, outcomes- oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.


A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.


A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

1. An earned doctorate in an appropriate field of specialization; and

2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and

3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education.

This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.
