Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Education, Health and Social Work invites applications for a full-time, twelve-month, administrative staff appointment with a target start date of July 2022.

The University of the District of Columbia is a public, comprehensive university with an urban land-grant distinction. It is the District of Columbia’s only public institution of higher education. It has historically been a minority serving institution. The University services approximately 5,000 students across its two-year baccalaureate, masters, and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty, staff, and students.

The Education Advisor/Program Coordinator will manage and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the University’s “Grow Your Own” Pathway to Teaching Program. The Advisor will serve as a mentor to program participants and assist them as they matriculate through the program. The Education Advisor/Program Coordinator will be responsible for intake, registration, and advisement of program participants throughout their time in the program. The Education Advisor will serve as a liaison between the University and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and partner school sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the position include:

  • Teaching graduate and undergraduate courses face to face, with possible opportunities for hybrid or online instruction.
  • Other duties include serving on division, program, college, and/or university committees, maintaining an active research agenda, working collaboratively with program faculty and area partners, performing service, administrative, and accreditation-related tasks as necessary to enhance the quality of the program, and performing tasks related to the development of excellence in educator preparation at UDC.
  • The successful candidate will be able to foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration and work toward continuous improvement as part of a team.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate scholarly engagement, including research, grant writing, publishing and presenting, student advising, outcomes assessment, service to the program, department, college, University and community.
  • In addition, the candidate must be willing to participate in recruitment activities. Experience with CAEP or NCATE is strongly preferred.
Other Duties
  • Intake / registration of program participants
  • Coordinate field/student teaching placements
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records
  • Analyze program retention data and advise Division Chair regarding approaches to increase student retention and completion.
  • Assist with gathering and disseminating information of interest related to Education programs, including on social media platforms
  • Provide additional support in the form of database management, reporting, data collection, and documentation as needed to support the Education program for program review and accreditation purposes.
  • Attend all program meetings.
  • Be readily available during hours when students are on campus; occasional evening and/or weekend hours required.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • A master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Student Services or an academic field related to the job responsibilities.
  • A minimum of one-year experience advising students or related academic functions within higher education or workforce development.
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, and reporting program data.
Preferred Qualifications
 
  • Teaching experience in P-12, workforce development, adult education or in higher education setting.
  • Experience creating databases.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders.
  • Experience with teacher preparation and licensure.
  • Experience with program accreditation efforts (i.e., CAEP, SPA)
  • Hold certification or licensure pertinent to the profession.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
