Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences invites applications for one (1) full-time, Visiting Assistant Professor one-semester (Spring 2021) faculty appointment in the Crime, Justice and Security Studies Program with a target start date of January 4, 2021. Applicants with credentials appropriate to Assistant Professor rank will be given full consideration. Required specializations for this position include undergraduate Criminology and International Relations. The position begins January 4, 2021.
                                                                                                                                               
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  
 

The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and levels of work assigned to this position, but they are not necessarily all-inclusive. Tasks that are specific to duties and responsibilities related to this position are as follows:

  • Participate in the ongoing development and assessment of the Crime, Justice and Security Studies program.
  • Write grant proposals to procure external research funding and enhance the program’s research infrastructure to promote institutional grant competitiveness.
  • Maintain currency in the use of software and technology in the classroom.
  • Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, and papers using rubrics and other student-centered approaches.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  • Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
  • Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities.

                                                                

Minimum Job  Requirements 

The Crime, Justice and Security Studies program seeks a faculty member with the following qualifications: 

  • Graduate Degree in Criminology, International Relations or related field, a minimum three years experience teaching Criminal Justice or International Relations at the college/university level, and academic qualifications and teaching experience in the core areas of Criminology and/or International Relations.
  • Applicants should have demonstrated skills in classroom and technology-based teaching tools.


 

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

 

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.
