Brief Description of Duties
The Department of Architecture and Urban Sustainability at The University of the District of Columbia, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) seeks candidates for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Architecture and Community Planning programs, with a start date of approximately August 16, 2020.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
2. Conduct research and scholarly activities in an area of Architecture and Community Planning.
3. Establish a research focus in any of the following areas but not limited to: urban sustainability, sustainable architecture, building technology, digital fabrication, urban design, urban planning, and built environment.
4. Engage students in community-centered activities to prepare them for entry level positions in architecture and graduate level scholarship.
5. Work with students to plan and mentor research and service learning experiences that stress the experiential, active learning and development of critical skills which are the focus of the Architecture and Community Planning.
6. Available on campus to advise students and participate in department and university service.
7. Work with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in the classroom and outside of the classroom.
8. Develop and maintain an awareness of urban planning, urban sustainability, and urban architectural issues in communities in the District of Columbia.
1. Terminal degree in Architecture (M.Arch. or B.Arch plus post-professional master’s degree in architecture or related field) , PhD preferred.
Minimum Job Requirements
2. Practice experience and Registered Architect (required) in one of the 54 U.S. jurisdictions, licensure in the District of Columbia (preferred).
3. Three years of teaching in Architecture and Community Planning field
4. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills
5. Proven record of teaching, research, and problem-solving skills
6. Familiarity with and adherence to NAAB accreditation standards
7. A proven commitment to continuous improvement and to proactive, outcomes oriented work in meeting the responsibilities and duties described.
A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
- An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
- At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.
Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent at the Assistant and Associate level.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
