Brief Description of Duties

Incumbent functions as Education Counselor in the Office of TRIO and College Preparatory Programs for the Educational Talent Search Program in the Division of Student Affairs, Vice President, Student Affairs, the University of the District of Columbia and as such performs the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 

  • Conducts individual and group counseling sessions specifically related to academic and career planning.
  • Maintains records for activities and reports via the program coordinator to the project director on a weekly or monthly basis.
  • Maintains individual student’s academic and services rendered records.
  • Provides assistance to participants in completing financial aid applications and college applications.
  • Encourages and coordinates project activities for the student.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Job Requirements
 

  • Knowledge of vocational and occupational information programs.
  • An understanding and appreciation of the diversity of student interest, skills and motivation in an effort to establish a climate for open dialogue for maximum student growth and development.
  • Ability to coordinate specific training sessions for students in the area of career development.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of counseling skills appropriate to clients in secondary education.
  • Knowledge of the organization, mission and programs under the jurisdiction of the University of the District of Columbia.
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with individuals from all walks of life including high level management officials in the public and private sector, as well as groups and organizations.
  • Knowledge of the mission and goals of the Federal TRIO Programs.
  • Ability to work effectively when confronted with emergencies and changing needs.
  • Ability to prepare written summaries of lengthy records and similar types of materials.

Condition of Employment: 
This is a sponsored program appointment. The duration of this appointment is subject to grant fund availability.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not in the collective bargaining unit.

Employment Benefits: Depending upon length of appointment, selectee may or may not be eligible for full benefits such as health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and will be covered under the University of the District of Columbia’s retirement plan (TIAA).
