Brief Description of Duties

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Student Center, the Recreation & Leisure Coordinator implements activities that encourage active physical lifestyles and stimulating in-between class time activities.  The Coordinator is responsible for implementing, coordinating, and assessing the University’s recreation program to ensure that students' physical well-being needs are met.  The Coordinator is responsible for the leadership and supervision of staff, facilities, equipment, safety measures, compliance, risk management, developing policies and procedures, liaison with campus partners, marketing, and assessment.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:  
 

  • Leads and implements diverse and dynamic recreation and leisure-time program options such as intramurals, open recreation, club sports, fitness/wellness, game & sport tournaments, and outdoor pursuits that minimize risks and provide inclusive, fun, and positive experiences.  Direct participant and member registration and enrollment.  Teaches group fitness classes and officiates competitive sports activities.  Provides evening and weekend support to area operations as needed.
  • Manages the 5,000 sq. ft. Fitness Center. Monitors the opening and closing of the facility and its day-to-day recreational usage and special events. Maintains recreational and leisure time equipment such as billiards tables, board, and card games, video game consoles, table tennis, and competitive sports equipment.  Ensures that the Fitness Center and related area equipment receive regular maintenance and sanitation services to ensure high availability and performance.
  • Develops and provides information and promotional material on area operations and programs, such as hours of operation, registration, member orientations, activity schedules, results, and standings.
  • Collaborate with the Department of Athletics on the scheduled use of the E.B. Henderson Sports Complex and its equipment for recreation purposes.  Investigates the use of and travel to external recreational spaces for scheduled recreation activities.
  • Facilitates the hiring, training, and supervision of area student staff.  Prepares area staff to identify risks and make critically sound decisions.  Arranges for area employees to become certified in areas such as group exercise and sports officiating to develop a tiered employment structure within the recreation area based on skill achievement.
  • Recommends the contracting of external group fitness instructors, personal trainers, coaches, and sports officials to enhance area programming.
  • Serve as staff advisor to Student Center Program Board on the programming of signature student events such as Student Center Extravganza and similar student center sponsored events. Assist the board in planning and implementing other student events and programs such as awareness and observance programs and events to students e.g., Hispanic/Latinex Heritage Month, National Coming Out Day, etc.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Health and Physical Education, Higher Education Administration, or related field
  • At least two (2) years of experience in administering campus recreation programming. Experience in Student Activities programming is a plus.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to work collaboratively
  • Prior experience managing and supervising fitness instructors, personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, referees, umpires, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in personnel management and ability to motivate students
  • Knowledge of best practices and standards in collegiate recreation
  • American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification or at least the ability to obtain such within one (1) year of employment.
  • ACSM/ACE group exercise instructor certification, ACSM/ACE personal trainer certification, NSCA strength, and condition certification, or equivalent specialty certifications recognized in the fitness industry or at least the ability to obtain such within one (1) year of employment.

Residency Preference: The Residency Preference Amendment Act of 1988, D.C. Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
