Brief Description of Duties
Reporting to the Chief Student Development and Success Officer, the Associate Vice President of Student Success (AVP) serves as an integral member of the Student Development and Success leadership team. The AVP is committed to supporting student success and provides innovative leadership and strategic direction of offices, programs and services that facilitate student persistence, retention, and completion. The AVP sets goals, establishes policies, develops priorities, provides support and evaluates all functional areas in Student Success. The AVP will foster collaboration with Student Development and Success staff, faculty, academic deans, and external organizations to advance the institution’s mission and student success goals. The AVP plays a vital role in fostering a holistic collegiate experience post-graduation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- In collaboration with the Chief Student Development and Success Officer, the AVP provides University-wide leadership, oversight, and vision for student success to advance the University’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
- Responsible for the development of policies, procedures, programs, and services that will promote, encourage, and support access, persistence, and success.
- Leads, coordinates, and integrates student success programs including Academic Advising and Retention, Academic Support Center, First Year Experience, New Student Orientation, Student Success Center (Community College), DCUP Scholars program and Career Services to ensure continued improvement and alignment with the Divisional and University strategic priorities.
- Assesses and improves operational strategies, staff deployment, and resource utilization to ensure optimal service delivery to students.
- Develops tracking and reporting systems for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating academic success reports to various internal and external constituents, and make recommendations for improvement.
- Designs, implements, directs, and evaluates centralized academic advising strategies for undergraduate students particularly first and second-year students, transfer students, and undeclared students.
- Works closely with the Registrar, deans and faculty to ensure mid-term and attendance reporting efforts, early alert and follow-through, and that other student support mechanisms in the LMS are utilized.
- Provides leadership in building and maintaining systems for student success data, leveraging performance indicator tools, analyzing data, and sharing results on a frequent and regular basis with academic colleges and other university constituents and plans for timely interventions.
- Provides leadership to strengthen the ability of student support units to make proactive, data-informed decisions through better access to vetted, timely, and operationalized data (e.g., improving support services for courses with high DFWI rates) by identifying metrics and student performance indicators to determine effectiveness of student success efforts and also providing leadership in discontinuing, improving, and/or redirecting resources to improve results.
- Leads and supports institutional strategies to integrate career readiness strategies in student employment and co-curricular learning experiences.
- Provides leadership, supervision, and support to the Student Success staff. Creates opportunities for staff learning and growth and ensures that reporting units’ operations are organized to deliver high-quality and timely services to students.
- Collaborates with university partners to integrate student success management technology in university retention operations.
- Develops and manages the budget for the Office of the Assistant Vice President of Student Success and reporting departments.
- Develops and implements a Student Success communication plan that increases awareness of policies and practices to support student retention and success. Shares information and provides training for faculty and staff regarding best practices.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Chief Student Development and Success Officer.
Minimum Job Requirements
- A master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited academic institution in Education Administration, Educational Leadership, Higher Education Administration, Higher Education Management, Student Affairs Administration, Student Services, Counseling, Behavioral or Social Science or a closely related field with at least five to seven years of higher education related experience.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.
Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.
