Brief Description of Duties


The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Social & Behavioral Sciences invites applications for one (1) full-time, tenure track, 9-month faculty appointment in the Political Science Program with a target start date of August 16, 2022. Applicants with credentials appropriate to Assistant / Associate Professor rank will be given full consideration. Required specializations for this position include public policy/administration with a research focus in one of the following areas identified by the administration, division, and program as priorities: public health, public education, environmental regulation, or urban planning. Additional experience in one of the following would receive priority: global studies/international relations, comparative racial studies, politics of intersectionality, and interdisciplinary social science methods. Applicants with credentials appropriate to Assistant/Associate Professor rank will be given full consideration by demonstrating their leadership ability to grow or reconvene one of the following publics facing programs associated with the program: the UDC Brookings Lecture Series, the Congressional Internship Program, or DACOR-UDC Mentorship in Diplomacy. The position begins August 16, 2022.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and levels of work assigned to this position, but they are not necessarily all-inclusive. Tasks that are specific to duties and responsibilities related to this position are as follows:

  • Participate in the ongoing development and assessment of the Political Science program, specifically in four identified concentrations: global studies, urban studies, public policy, and politics of identity.
  • Write grant proposals to procure external research funding and enhance the program’s research infrastructure to promote institutional grant competitiveness.
  • Maintain currency in the use of software and technology in the classroom.
  • Evaluate and grade students’ class work, assignments, and papers using rubrics and other student-centered approaches.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to address teaching and research issues.
  • Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
  • Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities (e.g., UDC Brookings Lecture Series, Congressional Internship Program, DACOR-UDC Mentorship in Diplomacy).


Minimum Job Requirements

The Political Science program seeks a faculty member with academic qualifications and teaching experience in the core areas of Public Administration/Public Policy, interdisciplinary social science research methods, and American National Government with the ability to contribute teaching and academic rigor to one of the following concentrations: global studies/international relations, comparative racial studies/Black studies, and urban studies. Applicants should have demonstrated skills in classroom and technology-based teaching tools. They are also expected to demonstrate research competency through scholarly publications and conference presentations. Ph.D. in political science or related social science field is required. ABD candidates will be considered, hiring contingent on degree conferment before start date (Aug. 16, 2022).

 

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

 

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.


A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following

qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Law 7-203, created a system in which provides that any applicant for employment in the Career or Educational Services who is a bona fide resident of the District of Columbia may claim a residency reference at the time of application. An applicant selected for an appointment based on District residency will be required to submit no less than eight (8) proofs of bona fide District residency. Bona fide District residency must be maintained from the date of appointment to the position for seven (7) consecutive years. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the (7) year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
