Brief Description of Duties

This is a mid-level management position reporting to the Executive Director of Career Services. The incumbent functions as the Associate Director of Career Services within the Office of Career Services under the Division of Student Development and Success. Manages the career counseling staff as well as assists in the management of the employment outreach staff and other career services staff at the central and satellite Offices of Career Services on the various campuses/sites at the university. Implements career programming for undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni in partnership with employers/recruiters and faculty/staff. This position is additionally responsible for providing career counseling services to a caseload of students and alumni.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises, manages, and trains the career counseling staff as well as other career services staff at the central and satellite offices of career services and submits annual performance evaluations.
  • Directs the career counseling programming for career planning, career readiness to develop students and alumni as professionals that are prepared for career opportunities including employment and continued studies.
  • Assists in the coordination of employment partnerships to develop career opportunities for students and alumni including but not limited to part-time jobs, full-time jobs, internships, undergraduate/graduate school admissions, career programs, professional development programs, and etc.
  • Coordinates career and employment events for students and alumni in partnership with employers/recruiters and faculty/staff including but not limited to career fairs, job fairs, internship fairs, on-campus employment fairs, info sessions, interview sessions, career workshops, professional development programs, career preparation programs, and etc.
  • Counsels, assesses, and manages a caseload of students and alumni individually and in groups on a variety of career development topics such as career exploration, job readiness, resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, mock role-play interviews, interview clothing, jobs, internships, other positions, professional development opportunities, and continued education opportunities, and etc.
  • Develops and instructs career workshops and presentations for students and alumni on a variety of career development topics such as career exploration, job readiness, resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, mock role-play interviews, interview clothing, jobs, internships, other positions, professional development opportunities, and continued education opportunities, and etc.
  • Assists the Executive Director with the maintenance of the career management system, career exploration assessments system, First Destination Survey, and etc.
  • Collaborates and communicates with internal and external stakeholders to develop career programing and employment opportunities for students and alumni including but not limited to leaders in business, government, and industry as well as administrators, faculty, and staff within the division and across other departments at the university.
  • Chairs or co-chairs the Career Services Advisory Committee/Employment Advisory Board.
  • Submits, analyzes, synthesizes quantitative and qualitative data reports while collecting data and completing data in the career management system, career exploration assessments system, First Destination Survey, student information system, and etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in behavioral health, counseling, education, guidance counseling, human resources, human services, psychology, school counseling, social work, or a closely related field.
  • One graduate course in career counseling or career techniques.
  • Five years’ experience in career services, student services, counseling, social work, business relations, human resources, recruiting, school counseling, or closely related experience.
  • Proficiency in career management systems; preferred proficiency with the Handshake system.
  • Proficiency in utilizing career assessments and systems with college student/alumni populations; preferred proficiency with the Focus 2 system.
  • Proficiency in student information systems; preferred proficiency with Banner and PeopleSoft.
  • Proficiency in social media systems; preferred proficiency with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and etc.
  • Proficiency in computer software including Windows and Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Proficiency in technology including computers, copiers, printers, scanners, faxes, telephones, projectors, and etc.
  • Travel between campuses student/alumni and faculty/staff as well as travel offsite to meet with employers and community partners.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is not part of the collective bargaining unit.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
