Brief Description of Duties
The Marketing and Communications Manager for CAUSES reports directly to the Associate Dean of Operations and is responsible for developing a marketing and communications strategy to facilitate and communicate the role of CAUSES academic and land-grant programs as a community classroom with global relevancy and reach. The incumbent will develop and implement a dynamic and creative marketing and communications plan to ensure increased visibility, brand recognition and customer relevance for all CAUSES programs. The Marketing and Communications Manager will lead planning and execution of community engagement and outreach activities with community and faith-based member organizations and partners to more effectively increase the College’s community presence and raise efforts in information sharing. Community engagement and outreach efforts will involve working closely with the Dean and other administrators. The incumbent will work closely and cooperatively with the Dean, Associate Deans, Directors and staff, must be creative and progressive, a team player, work effectively and efficiently, perform duties with independence, initiative, and reliability, work well under the pressure of deadlines and be familiar with or become familiar with the regulations, policies and procedures for marketing and communications as established by the University, District of Columbia Government, USDA and other grant agencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops marketing and communications plan for academic and land-grant divisions, including tracking results and assessing effectiveness of plans. Coordinates marketing materials and social, print, web-based and electronic media placement.
- Leads planning and execution of community engagement and outreach initiatives pertaining to CAUSES academic, research and extension programs, working closely with the Dean and other appropriate administrators, faculty, and staff.
- Supervises Marketing and Communications team, guiding processes, assigning work and activities, and ensuring that goals and objectives are being met and provides recommendations for process and organizational efficiency within the marketing group to the Dean.
- Represents the College on marketing and communication related activities on working groups, division meetings, and University-wide meetings, as requested by Dean or Associate Deans.
- Works with local Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners and constituency offices to coordinate and organize participation for focus groups and/or listening sessions for the purposes of informed decision-making and program reporting.
- Networks with industry experts and other land-grant institutions to stay current with trends and issues, identify new tools, and to keep the College programs aligned with stakeholder priorities.
- Works with marketing team, CAUSES administrators, appropriate staff, and relevant University offices to strategize and support outreach events.
- Creates marketing materials including brochures, newsletters, presentations, event support materials, and other collateral as needed. Works with design team to supervise formatting of templates.
- Writes press releases and edits a broad range of promotional material.
- Manages newsletter process including production schedule, content providers, layout/design, and distribution to ensure alignment with organizational priorities and milestones.
- Works closely with the University Webmaster to maintain the College’s web pages to reach intended audiences and leads the College’s social media efforts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and potentially other networking communities.
- Coordinates program coverage, including photo, video, and press coverage.
- Manages workflow production timelines of events and other marketing-related initiatives on behalf of the communications team.
- Assists CAUSES divisions with marketing-related campaigns and initiatives for recruitment and outreach programs.
- Manages organization of all marketing-related materials on College shared drive.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or Business. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in marketing, including community outreach and engagement.

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
