Brief Description of Duties


The University of the District of Columbia's College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences is seeking a motivated and experienced individual to serve as the Community and Student Engagement and Strategic Planning Specialist. This position plays a crucial role in fostering meaningful relationships with both internal and external stakeholders and developing strategic plans to enhance the college's community engagement initiatives. The position will report to the Office of the Dean.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement community engagement strategies:
    • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify and prioritize community engagement goals.
    • Liaise with community organizations, local businesses, government agencies, and other relevant partners to foster mutually beneficial partnerships.
    • Design and lead initiatives that promote active community involvement.
    • Organize and facilitate community forums, events, and workshops to promote dialogue and knowledge sharing.
  • Enhance student engagement and success:
    • Work closely with students to understand their needs, aspirations, and barriers to success.
    • Develop programs and initiatives that enhance student engagement, promote inclusivity, and foster a sense of belonging within the college community.
    • Coordinate internships, co-op experiences, and career development opportunities for students, providing valuable professional development opportunities.
    • Collaborate with faculty and staff to provide resources and support services that enhance student success and retention.
  • Strategic planning and evaluation:
    • Conduct thorough research and analysis of trends, best practices, and emerging issues in community engagement, urban sustainability, and environmental sciences.
    • Develop and execute strategic plans that align with the college's mission, vision, and goals.
    • Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of community and student engagement initiatives, adapting strategies based on feedback and data-driven insights.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop actionable recommendations for enhancing the college's community and student engagement efforts.
  • Stakeholder relationship management:
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with community leaders, industry professionals, government officials, and alumni to promote collaboration opportunities.
    • Represent the college in internal and external meetings, conferences, and events to raise awareness and establish partnerships.
    • Collaborate with other departments and units within the university to align efforts, share resources, and maximize impact.
    • Develop and maintain communication channels to keep stakeholders informed about the college's initiatives, achievements, and impact.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required.
  • Proven experience in community engagement, strategic planning, and program development.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of urban issues and their connection to community engagement.
  • Ability to think strategically, analyze data, and make informed decisions to drive organizational growth and impact.
  • Experience working with and supporting the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, handle multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and evaluation methodologies.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME local 2087 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Employment Benefits: Selectee will be eligible for health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and will be covered under the University of the District of Columbia' s retirement plan (TIAA).

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.


Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
