Brief Description of Duties


The Director of Career Services will develop and implement division-wide student career and work opportunities, and support services, including career counseling, evidence-based programming, and oversight of employer partnership and outreach activities. The Director will report to the Dean of WDLL.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and monitors counseling services and programming for WDLL students in all phases of career development and employment searches
  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and monitors division-wide strategies to deliver evidence-based, outcomes driven career development and work-preparedness programming and services for all WDLL students.
  • Manages the Division’s career counselors, employer outreach coordinators and other Career Services Staff.
  • Ensures that Career Counselor Staff deliver evidence-informed best practices in the areas of career counseling and development high-quality customer service. work preparedness/soft skills and appropriate referrals to district-wide resources.
  • Ensures that Employer Outreach Coordinator Staff monitor and meet WDLL performance standards such as: formalizing strong employer partnerships, advisory committees, and establishing WDLL student opportunities to include work-based learning, internships, part- and full-time job opportunities, etc.
  • Participates in Employer Advisory Board activities as needed.
  • Develops strategies to strengthen relations with WDLL alumni and captures relevant data on post completion achievement of WDLL students.
  • Develops, disseminates, and regularly updates career development reference materials; expands on-line library resources and maintains the WDLL Student Support web page and an overall online presence.
  • Develops and implements all WDLL student support policies, processes, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Participates in UDC committees, as necessary.
  • Participates in local, regional, and national workforce development associations and organizations. 

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Services, and/or Business or a related field. A Master’s Degree with a concentration in Career Counseling is preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience working in career counseling programs targeting vulnerable populations.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the Workforce Development field preferred.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience leading either career counseling, job coaching, and/or employment services Staff.
  • Possession of MBTI, Strong, NCRC Credential, and/or NACE affiliation preferred.

Required Competencies

  • Experience in and knowledge about workforce development, career counseling, and talent acquisition within a post-secondary institution is strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience in managing and implementing career counseling services in an academic/training environment.
  • Previous experience building and maintaining positive and productive relationships with regional employers and all other local workforce development organizations preferred.
  • High-level computer competency required, experience in social networking tools a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work with a wide range of constituencies and effectively work one-on-one with individuals and groups.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and lead programs of varying lengths.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, creativity, ability to take initiative, and work collaboratively.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
