Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia, College of Arts and Sciences, Division of Education, Health, and Social Work invites applications for a MSW Associate or Full Professor for a new hybrid MSW program. The MSW Associate/Full Professor is a nine-month full-time tenure track faculty appointment, with a required additional two months of summer work (at 22% compensation) in Social Work with a start date of August 16th, 2024. 

The University of the District of Columbia is a public, Historically Black College and University (HBCU) comprehensive university with an urban land-grant distinction. It is the District of Columbia’s only public institution of higher education. UDC has historically been a minority-serving institution. The University services approximately 3,000 students across its two-year baccalaureate, masters, and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty, staff, and students.

UDC offers a BSW Social Work Program established in 1976. The university is seeking a new MSW faculty position to help create a new MSW program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The MSW Associate/Full Professor will be responsible for assisting with the design and development of a new MSW program. In addition, the MSW Associate/Full Professor will assist with the candidacy process and ensure all Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) standards are met. The Associate/Full Professor will assist with recruiting faculty and students and developing program policies, procedures, and practices. The MSW Associate/Full Professor will have face-to-face and online teaching responsibilities. The successful candidate will also engage in scholarship/research and service that includes the program, University, and profession. Candidates should demonstrate strong commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and engaged learning. Distance learning and on-line course development experience are highly valued.                                                                                                                          

Essential functions of the position include:

  • Teach graduate courses in the MSW program.
  • Assist with coordinating the CSWE MSW candidacy process to successful completion.
  • Establish and maintain all requirements for accreditation established by CSWE in collaboration with other social work faculty.
  • Contribute to program design and curriculum development.
  • Maintain an active scholarship agenda, including pursuit of external funding and collaborative research that includes student participation.
  • Oversee recruitment and retention of MSW program faculty and students.
  • Provide academic advising.
  • Perform additional assigned tasks to enhance the quality of the program.


Minimum Job Requirements

  • A DSW or PhD in Social Work preferred or closely related field.
  • A Master’s degree in Social Work from a Council on Social Work Education accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two years of post-master’s practice experience in social work
  • Undergraduate and graduate social work teaching experience.
  • A demonstrated record of scholarly production, including practice-related research.
  • Demonstrated experience with the social work accreditation or reaffirmation process.
  • Experience in on-line curriculum design and development, including utilization of experiential teaching methods.
  • Licensed as a social work practitioner (or eligible to apply for licensure) in the District of Columbia.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity to variations across age, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, language, culture, national origin, and prior training and educational experience.
  • Ability to provide leadership through teaching, scholarship, curriculum development, administrative experience, and/or other academic and professional activities in social work.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: 
A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
